Nova Scotia has proposed legislation increasing political interference in universities.

Political interference in education isn’t just an American phenomenon. It’s alive and well in Canada too.

Politicians should not dictate the priorities of universities.

Universities Have Been Doing Trump’s Work for Him The University of Chicago, despite its free speech reputation, has laid the groundwork for the president's threats against students who protest for Palestine.

The NIH announced it will slash billions of dollars of support to universities and research centers.

This is one of the biggest attacks on science we have ever seen. It could dismantle the biomedical research system, shut down clinical trials, and halt development of treatments.

New Analysis Reveals Many Excess Deaths Attributed to Natural Causes Are Actually Uncounted COVID-19 Deaths The new study provides the most compelling data yet to suggest that excess mortality rates from chronic illnesses and other natural causes were actually driven by COVID-19 infections.

β€œAccurate information on how many people in a community die from COVID, or any other causeβ€”is essential for making decisions about public health. It is also important for families. Everyone deserves to know why a loved one died.”

It is simply not enough for universities to say, β€œOur grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.”

University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

In view of the anti-mask, anti-vax, anti-science "report" released by the AB gov't last week, it seems like a good time to reshare our call for a national inquiry into Canada's response to the pandemic.

How problematic is the Alberta report on COVID? Very.

Recommendations embrace misinformation & run counter to a vast & diverse body of evidence.

Policy analysis is nonsensical & displays a lack of knowledge about law or ethics.

This is science in Alberta? Dark Age 2.0.

White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

I think some people hear β€œgrants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

β€œPausing” grants means people don’t eat.

A friend of mine has skin cancer and was about to start a clinical trial at MD Anderson after his other treatments did not work.

Trump's decision to temporarily halt funding for medical research also applies to clinical trials.

His treatment is now canceled.

Freezing scientific funding isn’t abstract. In medicine, life or death is often dictated by time. Temporary delays can cause great harm.

Wider streets are a terrible idea. They are less safe, more expensive to build and maintain, and take up valuable land that could be put to better use like housing or public space. Most streets are already too wide as evidenced by massive β€œsneckdowns”
