Granted, these days I'm mostly writing Markdown, and the last time I had to write a Serious Manuscript I was able to use LaTeX for it...

Maybe I should thank MS for steering me away from the kind of work where I need to use their stuff everyday with their design choices.

Times like that I miss the "reveal codes" mode in WordPerfect 5.1, where you could see your document in WYSIWYG mode but _also_ inspect the underlying structure for subtle shenanigans.

Illustrating that the views of Iranians don't just collapse into a simplistic binary of "America bad, praise the Ayatollah" or "America good, bring back the Shah".

That "uncomplicated" narrative only serves to amplify authoritarian voices over caring about actual people.

At least Ovid's better than that ibid guy, who just quotes from the same sources over and over.

The old covid enquiry is dying, and the new enquiry (the Reserve Bank one announced to fill the void of covid enquires) struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters.

Thanks for doing the reading, Marc.

A very familiar water tower :-)

Jana was over in Versailles, west of Lexington. Spelled like the place in France, pronounced incredibly differently. They did have a castle of sorts, though!

The time I went, we were driving up from my fiancée place in Kentucky. I sure saw a lot of cornfields and warehouses on the way.

Was good to finally meet up with a bunch of folks I knew from IRC, forums and the like, though, and some industry peeps.

Yep, I was lucky I only visited GenCon later in life, once the hobby had diversified to the point where there were general hygiene expectations.

A sleeping orange cat curled up between window and curtain, as seen from the garden outside.

His head is thonked up against the side of the window frame, but there is a little bit of curtain fabric there to make a tiny cushion for his forehead.

There is a strange rhythmic snortling sound coming from behind me, but when I look around it is completely impossible to see where that might be coming from. Such a mystery.

Peeps who understand District plans and RMA can you object to a resource consent application which affects your community? Or get it reviewed?

I can recall a trip back from a conference in Taipei where there was a delay and I ended up leaving Changi less than 20 minutes after I got there. The electric cart ride across the terminal was... invigorating, one might say.

I will admit to being a bit nervous seeing my partner's flight thread the needle through the Caucasus between Russian and Iranian airspace recently. Connecting via Hong Kong turned out to be a good move indeed.

AI is already creeping into election campaigns. NZ’s rules aren’t ready Months out from the next general election, political “AI slop” is spilling over social media feeds. Lessons from overseas could help electoral laws catch up.

#nzpol Heads up and pay attention Aotearoa NZ. There's going to be a deluge of dirty politics and lies thrown at us on social media this year. Please remember to go to party websites to read published policies. Do due diligence and watch out for each other. 💪

Someone in this flat before us must have thought this was a great idea because we have three trees.
