During the darkest days of the AIDS crisis, our communities pulled together; lesbians helping to nurse gay men, Leather competitions doing fundraisers, and so many symbols of hope, all around the world, pushing for more research, better and cheaper drugs, and access to life-saving treatment. And it paid off; thanks to all those who fought, we now have drugs regimes like PrEP, we have the knowledge that U=U – people with HIV, on treatment can’t pass it on – and we have far easier access to testing. We owe a tremendous debt to those, many no longer with us, without whom we simply wouldn’t have come as far. And yet, we face uncertain times, with a resurgence of the same sort of anti-LGBT legislation as in the 80s, and savage cuts to funding for HIV prevention, especially in aid to developing nations. So this World AIDS Day, let’s recharge, renew, and remember the sense of community that brought us so far. And in honour of those who went before: Get tested. Campaign. Protest. Support each other, just as we did in the worst of times. The fight isn’t over yet.
