Yeah there was greater reliance on transit like streetcars; there were fewer cars, and there were also low density garages for rent. A few still exist in my neighborhood - alley-like rows of garages.
Fun fact, it was only made legal in the 1950s. Before that there was no overnight street parking!

one of my fav bits of trivia: for finish line photos, the camera snaps vertical slivers, super fast, and finish line photos stitch these vert slivers together. everywhere on the x-axis in the photo IS the finish line - the x-axis represents time, not horizontal space.
