I just checked in for a rental car that I'll return on March 20th. I don't normally get the prepaid tank but I did this time. Hertz might regret asking me to check in a week before pickup.

I was part of a grant on this list. ChatGPT said it did not have a DEI component but it was terminated anyway.
I purchased my summer travel airplane tickets over the weekend. The prices were already high but I wonder if they will turn out to be a bargain.
Here's an important new article about how academics and election officials can work together to find ways to build trust in elections.

Very likely.
The quick answer is the governor will appoint someone until the election is certified but that person must pledge to not run for the seat. Mullin was up for reelection in 2026 so no special election.
Not me frantically googling special election laws in Oklahoma.
This 50 year old full professor wants to know if sleep gets easier at 55?
I had already left MSU when I needed to turn in my dissertation. I had to print it out at a DC Kinkos and mail it in. I received an email that a page was wrong but they were going to let it go. A minor miracle.
We used to do a mix depending on the subfield. The last couple of years the last "controlled" exam moved to take home. Personally, I think the take-home is too much pressure because I would have trouble sleeping during the exam hours.
I know some of the neuroscience journals give a word limit for lit review sections. Oddly enough, that field also does "review" papers that are good lit reviews of a sub-sub-field. LSQ used to publish these occasionally.

We have students take exams in two fields, and if you pass both you proceed to oral exams. When the written exams are good, most of the oral exam focuses on dissertation ideas. When the written exams are bad, questions focus on them.
We have discussed writing and defending a paper. AI can obviously write a paper but defending it might be difficult if you don't know what you are doing. I also think completing a full paper prior to the dissertation is useful.
I'm curious how other departments are handling the typical take home comprehensive exam now that AI can write passable answers. Is the exercise even useful now?

Not me thinking I can download the concur AI resource when it really is just a link to a pdf.
And the award for the best use of air quotes in a hearing goes to....Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont.
A big congratulations to Carl Albert Center and OU Political Science graduate student Nathan Barron on accepting a tenure track job in the political science department at Florida Atlantic University. Nathan will defend his dissertation this summer and start with the Owls in the fall!
I'm curious how they count recent college grads. OU has about 2000 students in the freshman class from Texas. Is that a gain for Texas and loss for Oklahoma if they go back home after graduation?
I don't think papers necessarily have to be on a specific theme. We have an option to submit a panel and I'm sure we can come up with something that looks cohesive.
The CFP for the Prairie Political Science conference is now out. The meeting will be held in Banff, Alberta, Canada (Sept. 19-20). If anyone is interested in putting together a panel submission let me know. My (coauthored) paper will be on measuring rurality www.prairiepsa.com/call-for-pap...
Not great.
Step one was to take 2.5 tons of soil from the raised bed. Now I need to put it all back after moving the bed 20 feet. My supervisor is still on the job.

Lots of low mortgage rates and 40% of homes have no mortgage at all.
Allowed with a permit. So far there are bills about who can grant permission to shoot them at night, and how and where they can be transported, I assume after they are killed. From what I hear, rural caucus also has the best lunches.
One of my favorite parts of teaching a legislative internship class in Oklahoma is watching kids who grew up on more urban/suburban areas learn about feral hogs. I ask them to google "hogzilla" and then watch their faces.
