I’m not a taxonomist, but I think there’s a sizable group of folks who always called the African fossils H. erectus 🤷♀️
Thank YOU for writing it!! I knew right away where I could go to find a thoughtful, reasoned, well-informed, evidence-based reflection on the new guidelines… your Substack. 🙂

You could check out the articles in the recent special issue of PaleoAnthropology “What’s in a Name? Late Middle and Early Late Pleistocene Hominin Systematics” for some of the, ahem, discussion. paleoanthropology.org/ojs/index.ph...
I too am anticipating a prolonged and spicy, ahem, discussion about this - and as someone who doesn’t dabble in hominin taxonomy, I’ll defer to my colleagues who do. (And you left out bodoensis, too.) The muddle in the middle Pleistocene of hominin taxonomy seems especially… kerfuffle-y.

WHO’S CUTTING ONIONS IN MY OFFICE RIGHT NOW? 🥹 This email is from one of the Alabama high school biology teachers we worked with - I sent them all an email this morning letting me know the paper was published.
Here's a link to the open access article. I'm grateful to the amazing project team and fantastic Alabama biology teachers for collaborating on such an impactful project. evolution-outreach.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....
I'm delighted that the first publication from a National Science Foundation-funded study I led studying the development and implementation of teaching resources on human and non-human evolution in Alabama high school biology classrooms was published a few days ago! (1/2)
