I was delighted to celebrate with the outstanding students recognized by the Organization of Chinese Americans’ Central Virginia Chapter at their Lunar New Year Spring Festival. Their scholarly achievement and dedication to their communities represent the very best of Virginia.
I so enjoyed connecting with students from the Virginia Community College System and Chancellor David Doré for VCCS Advocacy Day. After teaching at Virginia’s community colleges for decades, I know firsthand the power of these institutions to shape leaders and change lives.

It was a profound honor to welcome the Venerable Monks of the Dhammacetiya to Richmond City Hall on their 2,300-mile Walk for Peace. Led by Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara, their journey is a living testament to peace and moral courage. Grateful to stand with Governor Spanberger and Mayor Avula.
A statement from Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi that reads: "I support the decision of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors to reject the proposed ICE site and strongly urge opposition to any other detention facilities within the county. The Board made clear that this proposal was advanced without transparency, without local input, and without regard for its impact on the community. "I have long advocated for a more accountable and humane approach to immigration enforcement in Virginia, and have raised concerns about expanding large-scale immigration detention facilities because of the real harms they cause, including family separation, insufficient regulation and safety standards, and the chilling effect they have on communities, schools, local law enforcement, the broader community, and fundamental human rights. "Moreover, large-scale detention has raised persistent legal concerns, particularly when oversight, standards of care, and due process protections are lacking, creating substantial legal and financial risk for states and localities, while doing nothing to solve the challenges within our immigration system and instead diverting resources away from what actually works: the rule of law, accountability, and transparency."
