China’s Clean Energy Push Has Made It Less Vulnerable to Energy Shocks, Including the Iran War - Inside Climate News As countries scramble to secure oil, gas and fertilizer, China’s bets on clean energy and coal are cushioning its dependence on oil and gas imports.

China is highly dependent on Middle Eastern oil and gas. But its pivot to electrification and clean energy is helping protect the country from the fallout of the war in Iran.

My Year as a Degenerate Sports Gambler Practically overnight, America made wagering on a game as frictionless as checking the weather. I was determined to understand the consequences—for my country, and for myself.

Ubiquitously advertised betting available through the computer you carry in your pocket via apps designed and managed by ruthlessly efficient data scientists and programmers seems like a mistake. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

Good news: the state of Kentucky set a state record and doubled its solar energy in 2025.

Kentucky jumped from 40th to 11th in U.S. state rankings for solar energy installed in just two years.

Nice work!

AI and Showing Our Work A little over three years after the launch of ChatGPT, I think we have to admit that the introduction of AI into schools isn't going so well. Every administrator I have talked to about this says that they are seeing a clear rise in AI cheating -- and that aligns with what we're seeing at SLA as well. And while yes, the promise of AI is great, so is its threat.

Three years into the Generative AI era, cheating is rising in schools and we have to be honest about it. Neither techno-utopians nor blue-book nostalgists have useful answers. Here's what we're actually trying at SLA — and why it feels so fragile right now.

I accidentally read this as “exomorons” and might run with it.

No disrespect to the original authors.

Or exomoons, for that matter.

I spend a lot of time sad about the state of my country as much as the anger comes across as the primary feeling.

Something that perpetually eats at me is that every kid in America cannot sit down in front of the television and just watch Sesame Street and learn and smile anymore.

Trump referred to voting as a "privilege" rather than a right. It's generally "voting rights," not "voting privileges."

How to stop a dictator I spent months studying how authoritarians like Trump lose. The answer is shockingly simple.

If you're interested in learning more, please read the whole piece here (GIFT LINK).

It represents the results of months of research, distilled down to a (hopefully) readable form. Let me know what you think!

Opinion | ICE Is Causing a Health Crisis Our patients face a cruel calculus: seek essential medical care and risk detention, or stay home and risk their lives.

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“For those patients who have simply disappeared, we are left to wonder whether they are hiding at home, detained, deported or dead.” Three medical providers recount what it’s like caring for patients amid President Trump’s immigration crackdown.

They are putting the exhibits back up about the people George Washington enslaved at the President’s House site at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia and someone is playing “Fight the Power” and “Celebration.” It feels like such a relief to see humanity, history & sanity prevail.

On Feb. 4, Matt Selman, The Simpsons EP, texted Christine Nangle with an idea.

Their friend, Dan McQuade, planned to write about their Philly-themed episode. But he passed away before he could do so.

Selman and Nangle decided to add him to it — days before it aired www.inquirer.com/sports/dan-m...

Love me some plug & play solar.

It’s easy, fast, safe, and doesn’t depend on permitting or infrastructure.

As pointed out here, it’s a consistent pattern across Trump departments to compel compliance through the threat of constraint without having to go to the trouble of actually carrying through on it

Opinion | Something Surprising Happens When Bus Rides Are Free It starts at the curb. It extends far beyond that.

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“Far beyond just saving riders money, free buses deliver a cascade of benefits, from easing traffic to promoting public safety,” Emily Galvin Almanza writes. “And it doesn’t have to be costly — in fact, it can come out just about even.”
