Trump’s War on Meritocracy
The president who blames every problem on DEI is staffing the government with underqualified loyalists.
"When you are selecting not only for loyalty, but defining that loyalty to mean affirming morally odious values and factually absurd premises, you are reducing your hiring pool to the shallowest part," Jonathan Chait writes:

Birthright Citizenship Is a Sacred Guarantee
The attack on it is a violation of the nation’s post–Civil War rebirth.
Birthright citizenship is “as close to a national self-definition as we have; it is our legal DNA,” David W. Blight writes. “One cannot overstate the gravity of Trump’s proposed action, nor the historical ignorance on which it stands.”

Letter reading, "Dear agency employees,
We are taking steps to close all agency DEIA offices and end all DEIA-related contracts
in accordance with President Trump’s executive orders titled Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing and Initial Rescissions of Harmful Executive
Orders and Actions.
These programs divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in
shameful discrimination.
We are aware of efforts by some in government to disguise these programs by using coded or imprecise language. If you are aware of a change in any contract description or personnel position description since November 5, 2024 to obscure the connection between the contract and DEIA or similar ideologies, please report all facts and circumstances to
DEIAtruth@opm.gov within 10 days.
There will be no adverse consequences for timely reporting this information. However,
failure to report this information within 10 days may result in adverse consequences.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Janet Petro"

Yes — that was prepandemic! I have now moved to Brown, and am totally planning on going to the 25th reunion. Are you going?

“Kamala,” by @kadirnelson.bsky.social, would have been the cover of the November 18, 2024, issue of The New Yorker, had Kamala Harris had won the election. Read about the cover that never was: nyer.cm/0syMCVN

Birthright Citizenship Under the 14th Amendment Defined America. Will Trump End It?
The 14th Amendment made the U.S. a place where every child was born equal under the law. That might be about to change.
Totally agree with this:
"A 2015 report on the integration of immigrants by the National Academy of Sciences found that “birthright citizenship is one of the most powerful mechanisms of formal political and civic inclusion in the United States.”"
