I wrote about seeing BTS play a whole set of mid-tempo songs from their mid-00s records that did nothing for me, and someone got mad because they love all that stuff. Different strokes!
I’ve seen them a couple of other times (once doing PFNO, once with the newest lineup) and they were better.

Important to note that Joey Lawrence’s brother Andrew directed it, and all three Lawrence brothers appear.

It’s still mostly the same guy but he has a legit band now. I’ve never been a huge fan of “let’s replicate the album exactly” and this version of M83 gets way past that.

I was unprepared for how good Rocket from the Crypt would be live. I’d only seen a few videos on 120 Minutes and dismissed them as ska-adjacent.
I appreciated Stars of the Lid before seeing them for the first time in 2008 but that set was incredible (and somehow topped the next time I saw them).

I saw M83 a year or so after that and thought they relied way too much on pre-recorded backing tracks. I’ve come and gone with their albums since then, with Fantasy being a surprising renaissance, and was stunned by how good their live set from KEXP on YouTube comes across.

Points of Inaccessibility, by Rafael Anton Irisarri
4 track album
The new Rafael Anton Irisarri LP Points of Inaccessibility is my favorite thing he's done since 2019's Solastalgia (which was my go-to brain reset during the pandemic), and I don't think it's very inaccessible! Nudges his tidal drones more towards Stars of the Lid's levitational ambient classical.

Accelerator: Stockholm 2001, by Arab Strap
8 track album
I’d found this live recording before Arab Strap did an official posting of it on Bandcamp, and it ranks among my favorite things from them. “Turbulence,” “Screaming in the Trees,” and “Blackness” in particular all kill.

I had it on CD originally, took me a while to get the 10" at a reasonable price. Definitely don't see it in bins.

I'd initially forgotten Melancholia, which was one of the harder ones to rate. I loved certain aspects (cinematography, intro, second half) while the first chapter left me a bit flat.
Noir/melodrama mix Mildred Pierce was the big surprise. Superb performance from Joan Crawford.

I’ve also seen The Cars That Eat Paris (a very Australian horror comedy) and The Plumber (a pitch black, uncomfortable comedy), which are good but haven’t stuck with me like Picnic and The Last Wave.
