What features are required to shape hypoxic niches enclosing meristems? We @viktoriiavoloboeva.bsky.social in collab @pieterverboven.bsky.social found that a combination of cuticle barrier, densely packed tissue and metabolic activity all uniquely contribute to maintain shoot apical meristem hypoxia

What is a plant cell type?
Made with Padlet
These webinars are meant to get you thinking and discussing too! We clearly have no fully baked answers to what is a cell type.
So we invite your ideas, and you can post them here: padlet.com/nolan84/what...

Orchid sitting on a window
Root section of an aerial root: tiny vascular bundle in the middle, lots of cortex, some velamen.
Highlight to exodermis and velamen cells staining with Fluorol Yellow (suberin)
Page from a plant anatomy textbook showing velamen, exodermis and other cell types.
Fun #MicroscopyMonday content: the aerial roots of my office orchid! Sectioned and fluorol yellow (suberin) stained by student in @dorotakawa.bsky.social lab.

I am so excited to share Dr. C Manzanoβs work: she demonstrates the developmental timeline, function and genetic regulation of the polar lignin cap in the tomato root. It functions as a distinct intercellular barrier from the Casparian strip and is repressed in inner layers. rdcu.be/d10Pd
