How a High School Librarian in Abilene Fought Back Against Moms for Liberty I entered this profession just as the storm clouds of the current book-banning push were starting to gather; now I’m in the middle of it.

“It isn’t that I’m more afraid of public speaking than death; it is that public speaking feels like it could cause my death. But I do it every month because I am a high school librarian in the state of Texas in times such as these.” 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

moms for liberty is mad that Des Moines Public Schools created a "loophole" allowing students to access materials they don't like — the loophole being a school library. the SPLC called them an extremist group. how is this still considered a normal parent group?

Strongly encourage all academics, novelists, reporters, bloggers, whatever to just email this account and state that you want to opt out of this idiocy.

Overload them with emails and make them regret they ever tried this shit.

I highly recommend Banned Together, an anthology by @ashleyhopeperez.bsky.social and @debbiefong.com with many great writers and artists.

We’ve submitted hundreds of PIRs & what we're finding isn't surprising. We repeatedly warned the TX legislature that these laws would cause significant harm. But we're never not astounded at the stupidity of what's being removed from libraries. We'll be sharing our findings over the coming months.

We've had a day to pull a few things together, so here's a thread some more targeted info opposing the potential national book ban just proposed in the House of Representatives.

This paragraph, by Carole McGranahan, encapsulates my main beef with LLMs and writing.

“Writing is a commitment to people”, says Jason DeLeon, quoted by McGranahan. Why, then, are we so eager to outsource this commitment to a piece of software?

A digital drawing of author Maia Kobabe, a white nonbinary person with short brown hair wearing a patterned blue shirt, who scowls while holding up a copy of eir book GENDER QUEER: A MEMOIR. Maia is saying: H.R. 7661 is a national book banning bill which seeks to remove any book that "involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism" from all public schools in the US. This would ban my books, and any other book with trans themes, from public schools. PLEASE call your House Reps and say: NO ON H.R. 7661!

fewer than 10% of students are restricted in school libraries by their parents

fewer than 10% of students are restricted in school libraries by their parents

When parents can set reading limits for their own child, fewer than 10% choose to restrict access.

Most families trust guidance and conversation, not bans.

You can guide your child without deciding for mine.

Protect choice. Trust librarians. Keep libraries open.
