Missteps, Confusion and ‘Viral Waste’: The 14 Days That Doomed U.S.A.I.D.

Fascinating article by The NY Times. I have so much regard for those federal employees and contractors who have been weathering this storm.

Me standing on the field in Liberty Plaza, holding a sign that says "make empathy great again", with empathy in rainbow lettering. Georgia Capitol building in the background and lots protestors around me.

Me with the other side of my sign in the design of an American flag: No Kings, Since 1776, Liberty. The words are written in red lettering, between red and white stripes, with the stars and blue in the upper left corner. Surrounded by protesters and Georgia Capitol building in the background.

Sign: Only You Can Prevent Fascism, with Smokey the bear's face hand drawn. His hat says "Resist" and he's wearing blue sunglasses with the words "Fuck" and "Trump" on the lenses. An American flag sticks out from the top right corner of the sign.

Wonderful peaceful protest in Atlanta this morning with thousands in attendance!

Roughly 69% of the seafloor was accessible to Alvin before (blue) its recent upgrade was completed. Following the upgrade (magenta), 99% of the seabed is now within the submersible’s reach. Inset: Alvin samples a hydrothermal vent site unexpectedly discovered in 2021 near 9°54′N on the East Pacific Rise during a 2024 expedition. The vent is off the ridge axis, where most venting occurs. This image was taken by a new high-resolution Multidisciplinary Instrumentation in Support of Oceanography (MISO) camera deployed on an imaging lander.

The upgraded Alvin submersible can explore depths down to 6500 meters (2000 meters deeper than before), now giving us scientific access to 99 percent of the world's ocean floor.

Much of that territory is still barely explored. 🧪🌊

There are three key facts in the Holocaust Encyclopedia produced by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. This is the second key fact:

What distinguishes a concentration camp from a prison (in the modern sense) is that it functions outside of a judicial system. The prisoners are not indicted or convicted of any crime by judicial process.
