macOS Catalina is compatible with these computers - Apple Support You can install macOS Catalina on any of these Mac models.

Well ... it is upgradable to MacOS Catalina (support.apple.com/en-us/102765)
whose latest version (10.15.7) was released on Sep 24, 2020. I won't call it upgradable from security and software support perspective :-) Now my MBP runs on the latest version of Ubuntu

The worst problem I had was my Mac froze when suspended (lid closed or systemctrl suspend)

You really need to have the thunderbolt/ RJ45 adapter because the WIFI card requires a proprietary driver. So no Internet after installation.

Positive action for environment of the week-end: installed #Ubuntu on my old MacBook Pro end 2012. It’s still a super decent hardware config (intel dual i5, 8GB RAM) but Apple decided to deprecate it (no more software updates). Now it works like a charm, perfect for secured internet browsing.
