This year I started growing a home garden bc I’d rather be bloomscrolling than doomscrolling. Hope I can edit my posts here. SoCal SGV Tovangaar LA Co; Zone10b SunsetZone21

After the Altadena fires, many families found that their homes were still standing but to toxic to live in. This is why we need AB 1462.

In which I sowed marigolds in 72 small seedling cells. Looking at contents of the open seed envelope, you can’t really tell that I sowed 72, because there! are! so! many! tiny straw-like seeds, still.

It’s a subset of all the seed heads I got from the neighbor

This is that same amount of seeds several times over.

Garden day today will consist of sowing some French Marigold seeds that will eventually go into patch with tomatoes

Seeds (1) came from dried out flowers from this (2) patch of long stemmed marigolds from an Altadena neighbor

Here, internet, a lesson I just now learned.

When checking on drying/roasting cashews, the glistening surface is not water. It is cashew fat. Do not over-dry/roast.

(I oopsie spilled some on floor and rinsed in sieve, dried out on tray in oven, same time as toasting walnuts for banana bread)

The Eaton Fire 14 months ago destroyed a lot of stuff and damaged even more. MSM & govt dropped the whole Altadena community into a hole & forgot about them. Matt's replaced his tools now & w/ $435 in materials he can get to work repairing things.

Pls RS/QS. Pls do what you can. #HelpFolksLive2026

Hello Fire Recovery Partners,

EFRU has been closely following Assemblymember Harabedian’s bill addressing indoor and outdoor contamination from the Eaton and Palisades Fires of January 2025. AB 1642 calls for health-based testing and clearance standards for the recovery of standing homes, schools, and businesses impacted by smoke and ash, and for soil remediation, in accordance with DTSC guidelines.

This is HUGE! Currently, there are no statewide standards governing the recovery of standing structures after a wildland–urban interface (WUI) fire, and AB 1642 would change this.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Unfortunately, many people have returned to homes, schools, and businesses still affected by contamination. Without standards for the recovery of a standing building that survived the fire, insurance companies have frequently failed to provide thorough testing or restoration of homes. EFRU’s data shows that 6 out of 10 homes that have been remediated are still not habitable due to lead and/or asbestos levels. Fire-related contamination poses a serious public health threat to our communities.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

AB 1642 is scheduled for its first committee hearing before the Assembly Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials. It is critical that AB 1642 receive strong support from community members, collaborative recovery organizations, and groups assisting residents who live, work, or have children attending schools in impacted areas.

Please consider adding your organization's name to the letter supporting AB 1642 below. It will clearly demonstrate to the Committee the urgent need and community support for this bill. Endorsements are needed by Wednesday, March 4th no later than 12pm.

Individual support from people with a standing home, those with a total loss dealing with soil contamination, those with children at a local school, or those working in the area can also be submitted using the button below. If you want to further support this effort, please sha…

What was going on in contemporary Pride and Prejudice era to merit “such days as these”?

(+sad… I am deconstructing a family library in such days as these)

More wrangling awaits me, just minutes from now.

Here is a map of soil lead levels from Cap LA (this was from the self-sampling era; we didn't self sample and drop off)

About a year ago, March 10, I sampled several spots in backyard (6 inch depth) and sent off to a soils lab in MA. Lead levels were Okay.

But 6-inch (root) depth is diff from surface depth (smoke deposits toxins on soil surface). Good to get these results.

The U.S. is a country that is unable to handle death but is awash in it. A country with people who often can't process grief. These are terrible things.
