March 21 is observed as International Day of Forests. To celebrate, the Forestry Department of Jamaica will be hosting their annual Forest Trek at Hillside, St. Thomas (Serge Island Forest Reserve).
📅 Registration deadline extended to Friday, March 13, 2026.

Tank bromeliads collect rainwater between their leaves, creating tiny freshwater habitats high up in trees. These natural mini-ponds support life like crabs, blue earthworms, frogs, lizards, insects and even birds.
After Hurricane Melissa, many bromeliads were dislodged from trees

Many people believe that it is an owl but it’s actually not one.
The Northern Potoo is a night bird that feeds mostly on flying insects and uses incredible camouflage to blend in like a broken branch.

Deploying some AudioMoth recorders to monitor wildlife after Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica.
One unit is recording bats at night, while another is capturing frogs, birds, and insects.

John Crows often warm up in the morning sun, which may help reduce parasites on their feathers.

They also play an important role as nature’s clean-up crew, removing dead animals from the environment.

Stick insects behave just like their name. They mimic twigs and branches to hide from predators. Around 8 species have been reported from Jamaica but they are rarely seen.

I will start with this beautiful Tropical house gecko (Hemidactylus mabouia) naturally found in Africa and was introduced to Jamaica likely by human activities.

Did you know? In Jamaican folklore, some people believed that Old Higue could transform into an owl at night — moving silently through the darkness to spy on people or even drink blood from sleeping victims.

Just another day at the Holland Bay Crocodile Sanctuary checking on our Jamaican Crocodiles 🐊🇯🇲
They’re facing:
• Wetland loss (their homes)
• Illegal poaching (meat & eggs)
• Persecution driven by fear
• Road kills
Sanctuaries help protect & educate. Conservation = coexistence
