SPARK's commitment to representation has been one of our biggest accomplishments. Recruitment efforts have expanded to support outreach in communities historically underrepresented in research, including African American and Black communities. In 2023, we launched an initiative to reach the African American community through a series of community health talks. SPARK worked with faith leaders and researchers in cities around the country to help congregations become more knowledgeable and learn how autism impacts families. It was through these outreach efforts that we were able to create SPARK in the Community. SPARK in the Community aims to support and encourage parents and community leaders from all backgrounds by connecting them with autism researchers and clinicians. Since 2024, SPARK in the Community has reached hundreds of autistic children, adults, and families from coast to coast, and we can't wait to see where we pop up next! Join us on Wednesday, February 25, at noon Eastern Time for our February webinar, "Awareness to Action: Combating Autism Disparities in Black Communities." During this webinar, Natasha Nelson will present a call to action for researchers, families, and clinicians. She will discuss why disparities exist in Black communities and what needs to change to turn awareness into action.
