Wars are extremely hard things to justify. It is intrinsic to what they are that they tend to death, destruction, and misery. Given this and some knowledge of history, one's default attitude towards powerful people purporting to do the world some great benefit by war should be extreme scepticism.

Supporting the NIH fellows union. Which legally speaking DOES still exist. Regardless what the administration tries to claim.

Medicaid Is Paying for More Dental Care. GOP Cuts Threaten To Reverse the Trend. - KFF Health News More than three dozen states cover dental services for low-income and disabled individuals on Medicaid, in recognition of such care’s importance to overall health. But with about $900 billion in fundi...

Dental care is health care.

Patients with cancer who don't have good access to dentists are much less likely to be able to use bone-protective drugs -- which means they're at higher risk for hip fractures, bone pain, and hypercalcemia.

Great thread. To be clear, just about every single component of the humanitarian system that we will likely need in the coming weeks is currently broken.

Today, we remember Olof Palme, the Swedish Prime Minister and social democratic leader who consistently stood for justice, equality, and peace.

He was tragically murdered 40 years ago.

His commitment to a more just world, in Sweden and internationally, lives on.

Just stating the obvious here, but we have to build a government that doesn't starve and bomb the planet for kicks.

The timing of the initial strikes is unusual.

Often you see these types of operations launched in the pre-dawn hours at the target site partly to limit civilian casualties.

This operation began at the beginning of a work and school day, with millions of adult civilians and children in harms way.

if you believe in any form of free enterprise at all, the idea that the Pentagon can not only cut off your contract but designate you a supply chain risk and prevent other companies from buying from you just because you won't build killbots for the government should be terrifying

Incredible opinion. It holds that the common ICE tactic of jumping out of an unidentified rental vehicle and seizing suspected noncitizens while masked violates the Fourth Amendment because the *manner* of the seizure is incompatible with a free society governed by the rule of law.

The End of Books Coverage at the Washington Post Becca Rothfeld, a former critic at the Washington Post, on the death of the paper’s books section.

This eulogy is so keen, and heartbreaking. I’m scared for us, y’all. It’s not just the Washington Post (or even just books coverage); across the board, incisive and productive coverage of the arts is being erased.

The left tried for decades to pass green energy subsidies, passed them, the subsidies worked, and now literally the entire planet's electricity grid is going to convert to solar+battery. It just doesn't feel like "tech" because it mostly produces kinda boring blue collar jobs instead of billionaires

Statement from Oscar-winning director
Hamdan Ballal:
This afternoon, nearly a year after we won the Oscar, the same settler who attacked me shortly after l returned from Los Angeles-Shem Tov Lusky-again led an attack against my home and my family. Four of my family members are currently arrested and one is in the hospital.
I invite all journalists and diplomats to come visit me and my family this Tuesday, February 17, to hear about how the situation has gotten worse in the year since we won the Oscar, as it has across the West Bank.
Email me to coordinate your visit:

Two weeks ago we managed to get a decision from the Israeli court that the area around my home is closed to non-residents, but the settlers break that order and still come with their flocks almost every day.
We call the police, they do nothing. The army comes, they do nothing. Today, Shem Tov Lusky-the settler who attacked me in my home shortly after I won the Oscar last year-came with his flock to my home. My brother called the police to report the incursion. The army came first and immediately raided our house, attacking everyone inside. Then they arrested two of my brothers, a nephew, and cousin. Another brother was badly injured and is now in the hospital.
The Israeli court decision was supposed to make things a bit quieter for us. But the opposite has been true. The settlers have ramped up their harassment and the Israeli authorities have done nothing to enforce the decision, and today they joined the settlers in the attack.

Trump's wacko-extremist Acting CFPB Director Vought had this worker fired for trying to protect private information. He also loves to starve the CFPB of funds. One way to hold him back is to click the link and demand Congress restore the agency's funding. bit.ly/lovecfpb #CFPBMyValentine #stopvought

hello and welcome to the political genius exam. here is question one. which is a more compelling message:

- the president is sending armies to occupy cities and kidnap and kill people and your town could be next
- a meal at the cheesecake factory that previously cost $100 now costs $104.9

In other words, long enough that habeas petitions can be filed on their behalf in Minnesota before they're whisked off to an immigration detention facility somewhere in the Fifth Circuit (where, under that court's current law, they wouldn't be eligible for a bond hearing).

The Bank of Big Medicine - The American Prospect Health insurers and providers are using industrial loan companies and other tactics to make money from financial engineering rather than patient care.

One arm of UnitedHealth extends loans to independent primary care practices.

Another arm denies those practices' insurance claims, putting them in a squeeze.

Once squeezed, the independent practices (1) need more loans or (2) are softened up to be purchased by yet another arm of UnitedHealth.

A Federal Worker Developed A Brain Tumor. The Trump Admin's Next Move Was Unspeakably Cruel. Russell Vought is seizing every opportunity he can to dismantle a crucial watchdog agency.

When Health Insurance Costs More Than the Mortgage - KFF Health News As health care costs skyrocket and federal lawmakers pull back help on insurance premiums, more middle-income families are facing tough choices on health care.

". . . the deductible is about a quarter of his yearly income"

"They would still . . . need to meet a deductible of more than $10,000."

". . . paying the same monthly premium for a β€œbronze” plan, but with a deductible of $8,450"

Good times, good times.
