What are import tarrifs? A tariff is a tax levied by a country's government on imported goods. Why did Trump impose them? Trump wants to reduce the gap between the value of goods the US imports and those it exports to other countries, arguing that America has been taken advantage of by "cheaters" and "pillaged" by foreigners. Is het right about that? America's average tariffs are lower than many countries but similar to other wealthy nations. In 2023, the U.S. had a trade-weighted average tariff rate of 2.2%, compared to 2.7% in the EU, 1.9% in Japan, 3.4% in Canada, 3% in China, and 1.7% in Switzerland. Based on the above situation an import tariff raise of 0.5 % instead of 20 % would be justified towards Europe
