Despite his climate leadership stance ahead of COP30, Brazilian President Lula is pushing to approve oil exploration at the mouth of the Amazon.
He argues that oil revenues will fund Brazil’s energy transition - a claim environmentalists strongly reject.

"Any type of political pressure that seeks to interfere in the technical work of [Brazil's environmental] agency is inadmissible, especially when it is a decision [regarding oil drilling in the Mouth of the Amazon River] that can result in irreversible environmental impacts." - Ascema
Scientists are training the first generation of rats in Tanzania to detect illegal wildlife trafficked products.
Their research shows that African giant pouched rats can locate concealed wildlife products such as pangolin scales, rhino horns and ivory in shipments.
An unprecedented study analyzed data from 1991 to 2023 and found that each 0.1°C increase in average global air temperature led to 360 new climate disaster events and damages in Brazil amounting to R$ 5.6 billion ($970 million).
The global warming process has accelerated over the current decade.

With the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) on the horizon, businesses must ensure deforestation-free supply chains. This piece from @earthblox.bsky.social takes a look at how technology can support compliance, and why it’s only part of the solution.
“For the first time in the EU, solar supplied more power than coal did last year, a new analysis finds.
Solar accounted for 11 percent of Europe’s power supply last year, more than coal, at 10 percent, according to the analysis from energy think tank Ember.”
Brazil is home to over 200 Indigenous languages. Amazonas and Roraima, to the best of my knowledge, are the only states that recognize some of them as co-official (Amazonas: Portuguese + 16 Indigenous languages; Roraima: Portuguese + 12 Indigenous languages)

President Donald Trump pledged a new era of U.S. oil and gas exploration, signing an order at the White House on Monday to withdraw from the Paris climate accord - a significant blow to global climate efforts.
#Brazil A parasite found in Pantanal jaguars could protect the big cat species.
Ranchers see jaguars as pests, but conservationists aim to reframe these big cats as allies for serving as key indicators of the biome’s health and controlling parasite-carrying prey.

"Carbon dioxide is accumulating in the atmosphere faster than ever before."
Notably, the Met Office notes that record fossil fuel emissions alone can't explain the surge, citing severe heat and drought that weaken carbon absorption by plants and increase soil emissions.
The Balbina and Pitinga dams have wiped out key endemic fish species in the Uatumã River (Brazilian Amazon), an INPA study reveals. 35 years on, rheophilic species like the Badi are gone, confirming severe biodiversity loss from the presence of Hydroelectric Power Plants.
