My brain was not designed for this kind of lifestyle.

This is especially frustrating when original works depictions of characters are pretty decent and feel natural, but when reinvented, they feel... empty?

And when someone finally makes a GOOD version, that particular adaptation becomes the definitive version.
But then everyone dismisses the source.

Love interests also don't need special skills or personality upgrades to be good. The just need more focus and personal time with the audience, so they can be seen as a person with their own thoughts and feeling and not as a reward or side piece for the protag.

You can still tweak a few things, just don't forget the source.

I love redemption arcs for beloved tragic villains, but we shouldn't pretend that the original doomed and unapologetic villain isn't worth looking into.

I think the best way to "rewrite" a minor character is to use a bit of psychological analysis to them.

Even the simpliest characters don't really need to be reinvented to be interesting. You just have to look at them and list all their traits an a white board and expand what's already given.

Like... it's understandable why people like this person, but you have spent years of putting up with nonstop exposure to the point of absolute intolerance.
