Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution condemning Iran’s attacks on Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and Jordan, with 13 votes in favor while Russia and China abstained. ➤ The resolution was presented by Bahrain and co-sponsored by 135 countries. ➤ It reaffirmed “strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence” of the GCC states and Jordan. ➤ The text condemned Iran’s “egregious attacks” and said they breach international law and threaten international peace and security. ➤ It also condemned Iran’s strikes on civilian infrastructure that caused casualties and damage to buildings. Bahrain’s U.N. envoy Jamal Fares Alrowaiei said the vote showed broad international backing and reflected “collective awareness of the danger of the unjust Iranian attack against our countries.” ➤ 1,332 civilians have been killed in Iran as of March 6, according to the country’s U.N. ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani, who said thousands more have been wounded. ➤ The Iranian Red Crescent says nearly 20,000 civilian buildings have been damaged, including about 16,000 residential homes.
