🌿 Postdoc opportunity in plant evolutionary ecology/genetics!

My lab in the Dept. of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to start Fall 2026.

We study plant adaptation, using weeds as model systems.

I would like to interrupt your doomscrolling for an important announcement: This figure from Ellen Dymit et al., 2025, depicts the proportion of vertebrate prey in felid scat, recorded as a Proportion of Occurrence (PoO). πŸ’©

Molecular phylogeny of Hyposmocoma lineages based on 38 genes and 82,875 aligned base pairs. 95% highest posterior density confidence intervals for the molecular dating estimates for nodes are indicated with blue bars. Different lineages are indicated by their larval case type, and exemplar cases are shown on the right. Bone collector and cigar case species are the only ones that are carnivorous. Current terrestrial areas of the Hawaiian Island chain are shown in dark green; shallows that were once above sea level are shown in gray. The islands are placed along the timescale according to age and geographic position.

Bone collector caterpillar (Hyposmocoma) comes from one of Earsth's most diverse adaptive radiations with 350+ Hawaiian spp. Phylogenomics finds 9 major lineages. Yet this one is monotypic (no sister species), split from its carnivorous relatives >5M years ago. DOI: 10.1126/science.ads4243 #2026MMM

Best Reduviinae tree based on RAxML analysis of 178 taxa using a partitioned molecular dataset of 5 gene regions (16S, 18S, 28S D2, 28S D3–D5, Wg). Bootstrap values are indicated on branches by colored triangles according to support strength. Reduviinae lineages are indicated as red branches and remaining reduviids as blue while outgroup taxa are black. The shaded red box highlights members of the hematophagous Triatominae, here shown as paraphyletic. Red arrowheads refer to the polyphyletic Cetherinae; the asterisk refers to Physoderinae nested within a reduviine clade.

The subfamily Reduviinae (Assassin bugs) is a taxonomist's nightmare. A molecular phylogeny done by Hwang & Weirauch (2018) reveled it is polyphyletic, meaning the group doesn’t share a single recent ancestor. doi.org/10.1371/jour... #2026MMM

Same and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s common among natural scientists; like we’re not supposed to β€œanthropomorphism” the stuff we study but I’m the stuff we study and if I’m me then why would other stuff not identify like me or feel like me or care like me or matter like me?

White House stalls release of approved US science budgets The US Congress rejected sweeping cuts to science agencies. But the NIH, the NSF and NASA have had their spending slowed.

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers.

The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡

The boys’ club: How Epstein’s influence shaped the exclusion of women in STEM In one email, an AI researcher suggested it’s β€œhard to be brilliant if you are worrying if you look fat or why another woman hates you.”

There were so many of us, exactly when these emails were being written, expressly working to undo the harms of sexual harassment and sexual discrimination in science. And so many people refused to believe us that any of it was real. It was all real.

COVID-19 vaccination status during pregnancy and preeclampsia risk: the pandemic-era cohort of the INTERCOVID consortium COVID-19 vaccination with a booster reduces the odds of PE by 30% approaching 60% reduction among women with pre-existing morbidities.

Remember when RFK Jr. unilaterally decided that COVID19 vaccines should no longer be recommended during pregnancy?

Well, COVID19 increases the risk of preeclampsia.

And it turns out that getting boosted, either before or during pregnancy, significantly reduces the risk of preeclampsia.
