Also the best way to try to form a connection with someone you admire is to treat them as a normal person and be friendly but cognizant of boundaries. So if they aren't responsive you just respect it and move on.
If they find out you tried to get at them through a friend they will dislike you lol
It's so much more valuable to be genuinely interested in and supportive of peers and people "below" you for legitimate friendships. If they do well then you get to watch your friend suceed which feels awesome. If they don't or just decide to stop pursuing the work, you still have a cool friend!
And as the OP said, people do notice this and they do talk about it. 😐 It feels vile and it can be more transparent than people realize
To me if you are disheartened because x person you admire (or whose fame you covet) wasn't interested in being besties then you need to do some work. But if you realize one of your peers only saw value you in you because of your proximity to something they want, it's fair to be really hurt and angry
To ward off parasocial weirdness (and because I'm busy or etc) I do have a lot of walls up so I never begrudge others similar boundaries (nobody owes you their time!). But it did really hurt starting out when I realized how many people only saw me as a ladder rung to get to more e-famous targets
