Cracked, but still there: the glass ceiling persists for senior women in science www.nature.com/articles/d41...
It is depressing to know that I have been reading articles like this for most of my career and that I will likely keep reading them for the next 20 years. Yes, gender bias persists.
I was using @chimerax.ucsf.edu just now and three of my enzymes look like the cutest lil' sea horses. Happy weekend!
Jerrie Cobb was an outstanding pilot who out-performed nearly all of of the men at NASA who were training/testing to go to space. Didn't matter. She was denied the opportunity, again and again, because she was female. This is the country we live in.

The future of research is imperiled by the drop in NIH funding for ESIs under Bhattacharya's leadership. He claimed that ESIs were get funded because of "affirmative action". When ESI funding rates drop, ESI will be forced to leave science. Also look here: drugmonkey.wordpress.com/2026/02/26/n...
Recently doing many TLCs and I didn't really appreciate how important it was to saturate my chamber. Now I know!

I have served on study section for many years now. It is absolutely critical that we support early stage investigators (ESI) and new investigators during grant review and funding. The playing field is not level.
So... A friend was supposed to give a PURELY SCIENTIFIC talk at NIH within the next couple of weeks and it was cancelled because of a "new process" where all speakers/talks have to be CLEARED BY A POLITICAL APPOINTEE.

"The Epstein files ... exposed a system in which some of the most powerful men in science actively worked to keep women out, mocked their intelligence behind closed doors, and used a convicted sex offender's money and connections to consolidate their own power." -A Mighty Girl (FB 022526) 1/2
Thank you @docteurjayp.bsky.social for hosting my recent visit to Lewis & Clark College! It was a great visit and I enjoyed learning more about your work.

Our department at Genentech is hiring. We're looking for a freshly-minted PhD (0-3 years) protein biochemist / structural biologist to join as a Sr Scientist. A rare opportunity to join our group leader job family at a more junior level than we usually hire.
The shut-down delays in grant review are really messing up my grant writing strategy. I submitted a grant in June 2025-- summary statement end of January 2026 (instead of Oct.) I wish I had extra time to process!

Thank you @compoundchem.com for recognizing the women of chemistry! A few years back you featured >180 present day women chemists, including me.

This infographic titled "The Women of the Periodic Table" highlights ten women and their contributions to element discovery. A central periodic table marks specific elements in green and orange, with lines connecting them to names and portraits. Featured scientists include Marie Curie (polonium, radium), Marguerite Perey (francium), and Clarice Phelps (tennessine). It traces history from early pioneers like Harriet Brooks to modern teams including Dawn Shaughnessy and Darleane Hoffman.
Today is the #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience π©βπ¬ This graphic highlights women of the periodic table, the elements they discovered, and the two elements named after women.
Plenty more graphics on women in chemistry here: www.compoundchem.com/category/wom...

"In 1736, I lost one of my sons, a fine boy of four years old, by the small-pox, taken in the common way. I long regretted bitterly, and still regret that I had not given it to him by inoculation. This I mention for the sake of parents who omit that operation..."

It makes me feel sick that Machado gave her Nobel Peace Prize to Trump. The idea that a powerful, old, rich man would feel comfortable accepting her prize speaks volumes.
I am grateful for the selective amnesia that allows me to forget how absolutely miserable and sick the common cold can make me.
My family did not suffer food insecurity during the prolonged shutdown in Fall 2025. But the reverberations persist for all of us.
