also btw something tangentially relevant: i see a lot of people say 'if akechi's dead then how did maruki bring him back? or was he just lying about akechi being dead?' and we actually do have a canon answer for that, and it's that maruki literally just had no fucking idea lmao

also i forgot to say this part but akechi is the only party member to learn protect (save joker from fatal hit) BEFORE endure. literally everyone else learns to save themselves first and he learns to save joker first. so there's already a precedent for his confidant doing environmental storytelling

so like, can it feel very narratively unsatisfying if akechi doesn't die after all? yeah totally. do i think the atlus team were geniuses doing this on purpose? no not really. but can i make it thematically hit? abso fucking lutely my man

i know it's a little bit of a reach to go "he survived because of this unlocked skill" but listen it's not about the literal skill unlock. it's about the fact that if you go with that interpretation, symbolically, it's his bond with joker that gives him the strength to hold on just that little bit

not counting third semester, what's the most key difference between vanilla akechi and royal akechi? his reworked confidant, which comes with confidant skill unlocks. specifically at ranks 9 and 10 (aka the engine room scene) he unlocks endure, which lets you survive a fatal hit

this next bit is gonna involve game mechanics, and i know some might think that's stupid and not accept it as legit reasoning. + it's fine if that's how you roll! but i personally LOVE game mechanics used in storytelling so: it's very important to me that akechi Only survives if joker bonds with him

i never put a huge amt of stock in futaba not being able to sense akechi's life signs because it's established she can miss things. specifically akechi, because he stalked them through 3 palaces and she NEVER noticed he was there. i can easily believe she would miss him if he was injured and weak
