March 11 (Reuters) - British government bond yields closed on Wednesday at their highest level since before the start of the war in the Middle East as investors doubted whether a record release of oil reserves could offset the economic shocks from the conflict.

Starmer’s Mandelson misjudgment laid bare
“The Cabinet Office’s “due diligence” check list about the prime minister’s plan to appoint Peter Mandelson as the UK ambassador in Washington had more red flags than you’d expect if a tsunami were approaching a pleasure beach”

i think it's basically impossible to price in $150 oil happening in a straight line. it's like being a little bit pregnant. things are either OK/manageable or they're not
wild card is oil goes to $150 for any reason, quickly, and doesn't immediately come back down again.
i keep asking investors about this and they're like 'i dunno, i'm not a geopolitical expert' and i'm like 'yeahhh they don't know either'
My rough timeline:
If the Strait reopens in the coming week, we have weeks of energy market disruption ahead but things have settled by the Autumn.
If the Strait is closed for another 3/4 weeks we have months of disruption.
If the Strait is closed for longer things get very bad, very quickly.
"I said Mandelson was by far the best qualified candidate for ambassador and had a blemish free record in public life"
"What did i say, Roy?"
"You said he had no experience as a diplomat, had been sacked twice from ministerial posts for dodgy behaviour and was a greedy bastard"

💥This is significant: Peter Mandelson was offered a highly classified security briefing *before* the formal vetting process was completed. Good spot from @jessicaelgot.bsky.social
This is the correct position.

BBC’s Nick Eardley: ‘Jonathan Powell found Lord Mandelson's appointment "weirdly rushed"
He raised reputation concerns with Morgan McSweeney but was told they'd been addressed’

National security adviser Powell thought Mandelson appointment was ‘weirdly rushed’ Files show that Jonathan Powell, Starmer’s national security adviser, “was particularly cautious about the appointment” of Mandelson as ambassador in December 2024 and that Powell believed the process had been “weirdly rushed”. Powell had served with Mandelson under the previous Labour government.
Desperately hope Jonathan Powell writes another book about working for a chief of staff who is determined to ignore everything you've written and prove everything you've said right the hard way.

#pmqs Starmer confident and sharp today on dual attack on Tories Badenoch and Reform Farage, backed by Lib Dems Ed Davey. Farage is a poor excuse for a human being, smirking when called out on his opposition to ban on hand guns resulting from Dunblane massacre.
