In terms of the timing of Japan’s proposed intelligence reforms, it’s reported that the Takaichi govt will aim to establish a National Intelligence Agency this year, while an External Intelligence Agency will be created by March 2028.

I just recently found out that it's quite easy (&free) to get in with a tour when the diet is not in session. We had a wonderful guide duo take us (a small group of tourists) through the 衆議院-side of the building and a bit of the garden a few weeks ago. Can highly recommend for tourists and students!
What a world huh Lemon it’s still struggling to be born
I was delighted to talk to former Singaporean ambassador Kishore Mahbubani about why China is more a status quo than revisionist power and the implications of this for East Asia as a region and the United States.

Not particularly familiar but I'm fairly certain that's しめ飾り. An end of year/new year charm.

I'm very excited to announce I'm one of the four members of Tokyo Review's new editorial team!
I especially look forward to platforming promising fellow early-career scholars, and contributing to a much-needed increase in in-depth English-language analysis on Japanese society and politics.
Tokyo Review has resurfaced as a source of smart analysis of Japanese politics, economy, foreign and security policy. EG this piece on the shaky LDP-Ishin arrangement.

Commentary: Japan is deploying two officers to Lithuania for demining training in support of Ukraine, marking a key step in its evolving security strategy and the maturation of its defense policy.
In her diplomatic debut, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi looked to put fears of a more hawkish approach to China on the backburner and, instead, embrace policy continuity, during a summit of Southeast Asian nations.
Trump, en route to Tokyo, says of new JPN PM Takaichi:
“I hear phenomenal things. She was a great ally and friend of Shinzo Abe, who was my friend. … And I know they were very close, and I think philosophically they were close ... That really helps Japan and the United States.”
For those that care. here is the full text of Ishiba's statement on WWII, focusing on the danger of nationalism and populism and the failure of the political system to control the military. He is speaking to the present moment, not only in Japan I suspect.

Excellent thread on the next round of political upheaval in Japan's political system.
Big news: Japan's Komeito withdraws from ruling coalition with Takaichi's LDP

@mstephen.bsky.social and I argue @ecprtheloop.bsky.social that the return of power politics favours cooperation through #IIGOs, as they allow powerful states to increase their scope for action. Yet, the systematic turn to IIGOs is at odds with the idea of global authoritative rules. For more, see ⬇️
A timely collection of great articles on the UN, including my piece with @lisadellmuth.bsky.social on the legitimacy of the UN.

I found this episode of the Making Coffee podcast by Lucia Solis an interesting listen: pca.st/episode/4f13...
Despite the podcast being on coffee, Lucia has a background in wine processing, so she links to that quite extensively throughout the ep.
A split of moderate votes in the first round and the support of a party kingmaker helped propel Sanae Takaichi to a historic victory in the LDP’s presidential race.
