The wages of community watch is (sometimes) donuts.

Grammarly declined my request to interview CEO Shishir Mehrotra today. But it told me that in response to criticisms, it will allow experts to opt out of the feature by emailing expertoptout@superhuman.com.

The company gave me this statement over email:

We’ve heard the feedback about this tool and appreciate the engagement from those who have taken the time to raise thoughtful questions about the functionality and the experts surfaced. We agree that the product experience can be improved for both users and experts. The agent was designed to help users discover influential perspectives and scholarship that add value to their work. We want the people behind those perspectives to have greater control over whether their name is used, while providing new ways for influential voices to reach new audiences. Our goal is to improve Expert Review to deliver this outcome.

Concern over US travel visas prompts Ig Nobels to move its awards to Europe Organizers of an annual satirical award for scientific achievement are shifting for the first time from the United States to Europe due to concerns about winners and others being able to get visas.

Having the Ig Nobels leave the US for safety reasons is a pretty on point example of the situation here apnews.com/article/ig-n...

Any protections individuals used to get are now entirely hollow, but the regs will remain so they can be selectively invoked at whim.

BREAKING: Alabama Governor Kay Ivey commuted the death sentence of Sonny Burton.

The state was set to execute Sonny for a crime he didn't commit, but tens of thousands of people nationwide demanded justice β€” and our voices were heard.

We passed pause evictions, save lives. Now it’s on Mayor Frey’s Deskβ€” please reach out to his office to support this critical legislation and not to veto it. Call: 612-673-2100

Families will face evictions without adequate time to get funds together for rent.

Books and paper are very fragile, but they're less fragile than almost everything else we've come up with.

Thing that really gets my goat is the way people are eager to fund this bullshit but you need eleven layers of analysis and a ton of collateral if you want to open a small grocery store in a food desert.

The Troubling Personal Side of Public Surveillance Law enforcement cameras are popping up everywhere, but many agencies have little safeguards to prevent abuse by individual officers.

I don’t think we should categorize examples where these systems are used by individuals for stalking or harassment as β€œmisuse” of the technology. This is very much literally why the tech exists, and there are no meaningful ways these uses are prohibited.

For libs & archives that do this, I often ask, "would you ever actually take a patron to court over this?" They almost universally say no, so I say "then you don't need it to be a contract!!"
But for some the posturing feels important. (For an even smaller few, they would go to court.)

I have to remind my mom (who -does know- those are often inaccurate) to scroll past them to search results. The design is insidious, bc they're so easy to just start reading!

Like that weird grifter guy who vampired his own kid and apparently tells random reporters in public that "biologically" he's 28, but who is 48 or so and looks like he's 60 with medium-quality plastic surgery.

This woman, US citizen living in Skokie, was detained at Ohare yesterday, taken to Broadview, then transferred to a detention facility in Wisconsin, now released. We know all this not because of DHS, who repeatedly denied that they even had her, but because her phone was pinging in those locations.

(Not something I think libraries & archives for the public -should- be doing, but widespread practice.
Also widespread are nonbinding -attempts- to control use as condition of access, failing bc confusion abt rights on the part of the lib or archive.)

07.03.2026 14:50 πŸ‘ 4 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

This exactly - it's what some libraries and archives do regularly to exert control over public domain materials. Contractual limitations as a condition of -access-.

I am once again begging universities to take political action and support faculty taking action.

Instead of doubling grant-writing efforts, give faculty .01 fte for writing op eds and articles telling the public how important their research is.

Devote communications resources to the same.
