Unsolicited writing advice, no. 1711:
Everything needs to pay for its keep. Every scene, conversation, description needs to have a purpose. What does it serve? Does it expand your knowledge of the world, the plot, the characters? If you can't answer, then however fine the writing is, it needs to go.
with its characters, and lets them make mistakes and grow from them in a way that endears it to me enormously. And the casting is so bang on, all the main three are consistently compelling to me even when the show goes full hijinks (and then does a hard left into heartbreaking drama).
Yesssss, I've seen it... too many times by now, but it really feels different on second watch, because you notice all the little cues and foreshadowing. Li Lianhua's arc breaks my heart, and the show feels remarkably sensitive about his health issues/disability to me. But it's generally so good +
A must-watch fantasy is the day 18 Asian drama recs challenge. I ummed and ahhed. I love #LostYouForever (the first arc is π), but itβs mostly not fantasy. #WordOfHonor is good but didnβt grip me. So . . . #MysteriousLotusCasebook it is! Identity porn, mystery, heroic fights, qi techniques aplenty.
I will absolutely second Mysterious Lotus Casebook! It has kind of consumed me, so maybe I'm biased, but the acting, the music, the action scenes, all of it is just thoroughly charming.
I wrote a Your Guide to Farscape story a few years ago and I'm always so happy to see folks get into the show, which I love a lot. Talked to Brian Henson of Jim Henson Company for this as well. This was such a labor of love: www.ign.com/articles/201...
the proliferation of omegaverse really took so much away from us. bring back sex pollen, bring back D/s-verse, bring back sentinel-verse, bring back mindbreak fic, bring back plain and simple whump. everything is homogenized and watered downβit's gotten SO bad. please, my family is starving.
JOYCE MESSIER - βOf bodies of water and forest-covered surfaces, clusters of light where the cities lie. You've seen the montage, we all have -- this world is enough,β she concludes.
CONCEPTUALIZATION - It *must* be. This is the greatest and kindest arrangement the atoms had in them.
A drawing of Neve Gallus and Tarquin from Dragon Age: The Veilguard. It's pouring with rain as they both stand under an awning against a dark red, scruffy wall with peeling flyers on it, smoking together. Neve holds her smoking pipe away from her face as she lights Tarquin's cigarette with her fire magic as he leans down to the flame.

SHIVERS - BY THE WAY, APOLOGIZE TO YOUR PARTNER AT ONCE. UNITY AMONG THE RANKS IS PARAMOUNT.
KIM KITSURAGI - βPress your damn cheek against Lamby, okay?β The lieutenant sounds authoritative -- and surprisingly gruff.

I do many of these things already in my writing, but this is still such a helpful holistic look at how to build a sex scene. And with the all-important "anything you do, do it with your whole chest", which really is the golden rule here. Thank you for writing this!
A dreamwidth screenshot, posted by iodhadh on March 30th, 2025 at 4:36 p.m. The post is titled "The Principles of Sex Scenes: Or, How to Think About Pornography in Your Writing." Alright, everyone: here we go. This is a post I've been thinking about putting together for a long time. I've been told I'm really good at writing hot, intense, and emotionally impactful sex scenes. "Sex scene as character study" is one of my favourite genres of short story to write; and I also love writing plotted stories that have a strong element of romance/erotica. It's high time I shared my insights for the people who want to read them. As with most of my writing advice posts, this is less of an instruction manual, and more of a conversation on how I conceptualize writing sex scenes and their emotive aspects. There isn't going to be a checklist you can follow to get things rightβsorry, but even if I did believe there was only one right way to do things, I just don't have a list for myself either! Instead I want to give you a framework for thinking about how to write sex and incorporate it into your stories, and from there to perhaps dig a little into some of the technical aspects of writing as applied particularly to sex scenes. Some of this may involve a bit of a shift in how you think about sexual writing; some aspects of it touch on elements of sexual politics and my personal beliefs surrounding sex and narrative. And, honestly, I'm not yet fully sure where this post is going to go! Much like how I think about writing plot, this is something I have an instinctive sense for, and will be articulating as I go.

digital fan art of Neve and Lucanis from Dragon Age: The VeilGuard, done in a painterly style and a warm palette of browns, beige and soft teal. Neve is a woman in her mid-thirties, with light brown skin and long straight dark brown hair. she is wearing a white silk shirt with a low neckline that shows her cleavage, a pair of fitted turquoise pants, and a short leather vest. her geometric drop earring and the buttons on her clothes are all done in gold, and her eyes are accentuated with dark eye shadow. Lucanis is a light-skinned man of similar age to Neve, dressed in a shirt, trousers and a waistcoat in shades of brown and dark blue. he has straight shoulder-length black hair that would ordinarily be slicked back, but is now partially falling down as he is leaning over Neve, who has her head pillowed in his lap. they are looking at each other, Neve with a crooked grin, Lucanis with a softer, smaller smile. one of Neve's arms is resting on the ground, the hand relaxed and close to her head, while the other is reaching up, her palm curling around the back of Lucanis's neck, keeping him close.
commission for @mllekurtz.bsky.social, who requested Neve and Lucanis posed in the style of one of the photographs from a Marjorie Morningstar (1958) photoshoot! both the composition and the characters were so fun to work on, thank you for commissioning me π

In Kim's flat Harry and Kim are having breakfast in bed. It's an attic bedroom with sunlight coming through as backlight to them, the room and its walls are decorated with various posters that hint at Kim's interests and hobbies. Air-force models, sewing kit stashed away in the bedside drawer, speed freaks posters as well as tiptop racing posters, a breakdown of the Coupris Kineema details in post card size, radio, cigarettes, toilet paper roll, a used condom wrapper are visible. Harry is twirling his beard and seems to be talking about something while he hold his black coffee with the other hand. Kim lazily looking at Harry, with a small grin and some stubble showing on his chin. He's chewing on his toast with strawberry jam while filling out his crossword puzzle magazine.
