Everyone who had the most at stake by losing the war was ready to fight: Ossoff, Frontline House Dems, THE UNION REPRESENTING FEDERAL WORKERS
Who backed out of the fight? The people with the least to lose, but the most responsibility in waging it. They just know they don't have the juice
This entire fight boils down to:
1) Support a CR which includes massive cuts and provides legitimacy to actions *you* say are unlawful and dangerous
2) Vote no, brace for pain, shine a spotlight on Musk/Trump's destruction and bet on the strength of your argument to win a messaging war
You would think if the chief concern was how a shut down would effect Dems' general election chances someone like Ossof - up in 2026 - would be on this list
Instead it's a bunch of impending retirees who don't have to answer to their own voters, and leadership members who are addicted to losing
So far the approach of every Canadian citizen and politician has been to put up a united and defiant front against baseless economic war... and Trump has folded within 48 hours every time
Good to know the "opposition" party is adopting the roll over and die strategy instead. I'm sure it'll go well
I will be going forward. (Esp. With the non football takes)
From a deontological perspective there are certain actions worth taking regardless of political calculations or consequences. Handing Musk unfettered access to gut the govt is one
But Schumer and co. have effectively painted their side into a lose/lose scenario regardless of outcome today
Seems bad that in the lead up to the shut down vote Dems spent 24 hours actively waffling, and essentially taking agency for the potential shut down.
The gambit only works if you win the PR war, and they've certainly kneecapped their odds of that since yday regardless of outcome
As of yday polling was 53/32 blaming Repubs/Trump for a perspective shut down.
At the time it was 2 sides arguing for different CRs, neither willing to compromise.
Now, Dems have allowed to optics to paint Repub CR as the default option, and themselves as belligerent party (even if unfair). Bad!

The echo chamber conversation is weird because the people making those criticisms (journalists) use social media to escape echo chambers whereas I think most normal people have jobs where they rarely interact with people who share their exact values, social media connects them to likeminded folk
