A powerful essay by the fearless @faniaoz-salzberger.bsky.social on the necessary moral reckoning that has to follow the cease-fire, on BOTH sides. fathomjournal.org/difficult-co...
@faniaoz-salzberger.bsky.social
"A good leader should be able to tell his or her own people hard and uncomfortable truths. The current Israeli leadership is not up to the challenge.
We need to stop expecting miracles. We need to deradicalise."

Die 3 gegenwärtigen Brennpunkte zusammengefasst:
Pro-Israel; Pro-Palästina; Pro-Peace.
Bitte RP.
It’s olive picking time in the West Bank again. Violent settlers, who have forgotten how to be Jewish, are attacking harvesters, beating up an old woman, destroying trees. They go unarrested and unpunished.
When he was still healthy, Amos Oz would be there with other volunteers, helping the pickers.

Importante thread:
So all living Israeli hostages have come home. A huge emotional weight off our shoulders. We can no longer postpone the next steps.
Many of us, perhaps even most of us, are going to stay on the streets for our remaining and ongoing struggles:
⬇️
* Keeping up our legal and moral fight against social media lies, libels and venom.
* Supporting pro-peace discourse and the current opening of a horizon for regional peace talks.
The Netanyahu government needs to know that it cannot silence us.
Shabbat shalom from Israeli civil society.
* Ending settler/army violence against West Bank Palestinians.
* Stopping the Ben Gvir police aggresion against protesters, illegal arrests and harassment of both Jewish and Arab citizens.
* Blocking anti-democratic legislation, defending the independence of the judiciary and freedom of the press.
⬇️
* A state inquiry commission on 7 October and aftermath.
* Civic alertness to ensure that the Israeli government maintains the ceasefire and ‘day after’ agreements, as negotiated by Trump.
* Elections as soon as possible, fair and unrigged.

⬇️
Regardless of any genuine and heartfelt empathy for the innocent people in Gaza -
anyone marching today to cheer Hamas and celebrate the anniversary of 7 October 2023 is, to put it simply, the scum of the earth.
➡️ (without a commitment from Hamas to disarm) in exchange for a cessation of fighting and a gradual withdrawal.
It’s evident than ever, one would have to be blind not to see: war was artificially prolonged, hostages suffered and died. All on the altar of his political survival.”
A very prevalent opinion in Israel today, as voiced by journalist Sefi Ovadia:
“In the end, Netanyahu is doing what he was called to do for a long period of time and refused (yes, refused for political reasons). He agrees, under pressure from Trump, to the release of hostages first ⬇️
Sad that this still needs repeating.

This Yom Kippur, unlike those who are obeying all the religious rules without an iota of regret in their hearts, I turn to the Israel I was brought up to love, and to the kibbutz I grew up in.
To the generation whose families were recently burnt in Europe, but taught us to work hard and seek peace.
Have started this and it's already a superb read.
Fania here finishes an essay with "So, if you are still, in any reasonable way, ‘pro-Israel’ at the present horrendous moment, please consider backing its civil society rather than its calamitous government. You can no longer support both."

Please read @faniaoz-salzberger.bsky.social:"Israel’s remaining true friends, and Palestine’s true friends, are invited to support our pro-democracy civil society, especially the peace-seeking part. Reasonable governments should sanction or punish Netanyahu, but beware of rewarding Hamas."
This is a very important piece from @faniaoz-salzberger.bsky.social - please read and consider. And governments MUST act to save both Palestine and Israel from Netanyahu and his genocidal partners.
The Hebrew Bible is not only a “religious” text, but also a historical and cultural one, just the Homer and Plato are all three. And you really need to get off my feed to you are denying my parents’ right not to have been murdered.
ILLEGITIMATE, the writers’ and poets’ protest movement’s new English-language anthology, published ahead of the Netanyahu couple’s trip to the US, is available here. Please read and share.

As it happened, its official name under the British Mandate was Palestine-Eretz Yisrael (Land of Israel) consult the Balfour Declaration, and take a quick look at the Hebrew Bible while you are at it.
The battle for the soul of Israel
The country’s moderates are not giving up the struggle against their rogue government — and progressives elsewhere must not give up on them, writes historian Fania Oz-Salzberger

Like hundreds of thousands of Jewish Israelis, I’d never have been born had my four Zionist grandparents not left Eastern Europe just ahead of the Nazi conquest.
By then, there was only one place where Jews could legally migrate.
So if you’d rather live in a world without Zionism, leave my feed.

Because it’s never too early, or too late, for a good book and half a pint of lager.
It's not obligatory to agree with Fania but it's essential reading if, especially from a distance, you want to express a balanced, non-sectarian opinion. Precisely because the world is becoming more sectarian and Israel with it, I'm pessimistic. The title of the article seems to me very appropriate.
