When students know the flow of class, how to catch up, where to find missed work, and how to keep going even if the teacher’s out or the schedule shifts—that’s a system doing its job. It keeps us grounded. We’re not relying on last-minute fixes. We’ve already built the support.

Some days, class won’t go as planned. Weather delays, surprise announcements, or a sudden shift online can throw things off. That’s when systems matter most. They keep students from feeling lost and help learning continue—even when everything else feels uncertain.

It might feel like we’re delaying the “real” work, but this slow start pays off. Clear routines make learning smoother, calmer, and more consistent. When things get messy later—deadlines, stress, surprises—we won’t scramble. We’ll already know what to do, and students will too.

We’re starting the school year by focusing on systems, routines, and expectations—not jumping straight into lessons. It’s not glamorous, but it sets the tone. A strong foundation now means fewer disruptions later. When things get busy, we’ll be ready because we took the time to build first.

‘Shoveling sand into a box’ Jordan Peele on writing the first draft

‘When I’m writing the first draft, I’m constantly reminding myself that I’m simply shoveling sand into a box so that later I can build castles.’

I’ve been looking for an answer to the question: why/what should I post on social media? It feels like everyone is sharing everything about their lives and I don’t think I want that. This might be the start of an answer.

I stumbled on this article on ig- Breadcrumbs by Simon Sarris. I like the idea of leaving breadcrumbs for people to find you and sharing what you are learning. Maybe this is a way for me to connect to others in a way that creates something meaningful, to leave something meaningful.

The part of George Orwell’s 1984 that everyone forgets is how the music and publishing industries have been replaced by a machine that spits out songs and bad novels “without any human intervention.” The goal is to keep you from ever having to think.

Why I'm quitting the Washington Post Democracy can't function without a free press

Bravo, @anntelnaes.bsky.social.

I guess the new slogan for the Washington Post ought to be:

“Newspapers die in cowardice.”

I don’t believe I’ve achieved perfect balance but I follow a policy of only communicating during school hours and having clear lines of communication. It may also help that I have regular exit tickets to get feedback/comments from my classes so they have multiple ways of contacting me.

I don't know of a single person who hasn't found this enormously effective when giving feedback.
This is a case of trying something out yourself & not waiting — dare I say it, unintelligently — until a research paper tells you it works.

Parking lots turn streets into miserable places to walk.

New study finds that parking lots "negatively - and substantially - impact walkability; their objective walkability score is half that of other road segments."

This drainage feature on Stationsplein in Zwolle collects rainwater during heavy downpours in an underground reservoir. The stored water later flows underground to nourish green spaces when the weather is dry. Smart design for climate adaptation.

"one key takeaway...is that researchers should use AI to enhance clarity and precision in their writing. They should not use it as an autonomous content producer. The human researcher should remain the intellectual driver of the work.”

“Making walking and cycling more practical and safer, and access to green space easier and more equitable, would go a long way toward removing barriers to improving physical activity levels and could significantly improve the health of England’s increasingly urban population,” the report added.
