Another huge leap in European Nutrient-related work from our group is published in Nature Food, showing via a comprehensive scenario analysis of nitrogen surplus typologies in Europe that a 20% fertilizer reduction may fall short of 2030 EU Green Deal goals.

It has been possible with a sheer and persistent determination of our team - the work led by Masooma and supported by Fanny! And Iβm incredibly proud to be part of this work.
Pursuing FAIR Science:
As always, we went the extra mile in this study by not only detailing our "methodology to reconstruct historical P surplus" but also by making the "dataset publicly available" β a commitment to open and transparent science!
Check out our latest work on the century-long analysis of phosphorus (P) surplus across Europe's soils, highlighting how P has accumulated from 1850 to 2019 at high spatial detail. essd.copernicus.org/articles/17/...
A collective effort powered by an incredible team: @lese66.bsky.social , Stephan T, @orakovec.bsky.social , Andreas M, Niko Wanders, Ming Pan, Falk HeΓe, and Sabine A. Thank you!
This research would not have been possible without our early efforts in making high-resolution Europe-wide simulations conducted as part of the EdGE project and the following HOKLIM project
And here comes the hidden part: Beyond regional differentiated analysis, we also look critically into the seasonal changes in groundwater recharge - this has been a missing piece in many large-scale assessments.
The findings underscore the growing urgency for the Central European region to better pinpoint uncertainties in climate impact assessments.
A clear north-south polarization emerges β Mediterranean regions will likely experience a significant decline in groundwater recharge, while Scandinavian regions are projected to receive more recharge in the future. Intensification grows as we go towards higher warming levels.
Based on our multi-model ensemble, we present the Europe-wide, high-resolution multi-model assessment of groundwater recharge under different global warming levels.
ππ§ This one is close to my heart! After nearly five years in the making (while juggling many other commitments, COVID times), Iβm thrilled to share our latest work:

A chalkboard displays handwritten text in white chalk. The conjugation of the verb βhaveβ appears at the top: βI have, You have, She, He has, We have, You have, They have.β Below, the sentence βA right to educationβ is written in larger letters. In the bottom-right corner, a small European Union flag is sketched. Two pieces of chalk and an eraser rest on the wooden chalkboard ledge.

- It marks a significant step forward, fully integrating novel CRNS measurements with their forward processing module in mHM.
- Enabled the direct incorporation of CRNS measurements into the mHM model, enhancing its soil moisture processes and other related processes (e.g., evapotranspiration).
