I may or may not have shouted in horror to my therapist after the 2025 election "my country is marrying the abuser!!"

in addition to the long, determined chant of "actually, that's rape" we need to have an even longer determined chant of "actually, that's child abuse" before we'll get another chance to not vote in a steady stream of abusers, who just seem normal to a horrifying number of people

My sense is for a lot of people, being able to quickly determine who can dominate whom feels like a matter of life and death. The wiring for that worldview is available in all of us, but some of us have access to other wiring some or most of the time?

I spent the last week writing up this essay on what it means to be trans in this moment. What it means to live under authoritarianism as the scapegoated minority of the moment and how it feels inescapable as an infinite loop.

I am REALLY excited to share this manuscript from my group now on bioarxiv. Here we used the OAA lectin scaffold to ask can lectins be evolved to have specific interactions for defined glycan structures . www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Suppression of individuality is an essential part of the some-ppl-are-worth-more worldview. Everyone must fit into one of the known person categories so they can be sorted at a glance. Anyone trying to avoid being instantly sorted must be whacked until they stay put in a bucket. [sob]

it's horrifying how little humanity can be left in a person and they are still walking around attracting followers -it's like a cockroach surviving without its head. Really??? Strip away everything but the will to dominate and skill at lying and ppl are still like "sure, seems legit"

β€œThe pessimism of the intellect means seeing the Loop for what it is with no illusions, no false exits, and no comforting narratives about the arc of history. The optimism of the will means refusing to let that clarity become paralysis.” Such powerful writing, thank you for sharing! πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈπŸ«‘πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈπŸ«‘

I've been looking forward to this arrival. It's a wonderful project by composer Quinsin Nachoff, inspired by my writings on pattern formation. Jazz-inflected modern classical, and if you like that kind of thing (I do), you should like this. More here: quinsin.com/patterns-fro...

Hot off the press!

I'm thrilled to share that our paper "Unravelling the Maturation Pathway of a Eukaryotic Virus through Cryo-EM" has been published!

Link to the paper: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Nature is full of remarkable protein nanomachines, and now we can watch one more in action.

This is to say: if you're an attorney who's hesitated to take on habeas cases because you think you lack the knowledge, or you're worried about whether you'll really help, I PROMISE you can make a difference. I'm just a dipshit with a 7-year-old laptop and a bad attitude. If I can do it, so can you.

This looks like *such* a great project.

If it wasn't for the quantitative focus, I'd probably apply for it myself.

Eradication of latent Epstein-Barr virus by hydroxyurea alters the growth-transformed cell phenotype - PubMed The hallmark of infection by human herpesviruses, life-long persistence in the host, is unaffected by current antiviral therapies effective against replication of virus. In vitro studies indicated that low concentrations of the ribonucleotide reductase inhibitor, hydroxyurea, completely eliminated E …

RNA-specific local translation is patterned by condensates for multinucleate cell growth - Nature Cell Biology Geisterfer, Jalihal et al. show spatially distinct effects of Whi3 condensates on target translation in Ashbya syncytia. Condensates are powerful ways to break symmetry and cells do remarkable things with them. Here we show that in a multinucleate fungus, a condensate regulates translation of a cyclin and a formin in distinct locations.

Structural studies have provided new insights into lenacapavir's unique mechanism of action. Using electron cryotomography, researchers found that treatment of intact HIV capsids with lenacapavir causes capsids to rupture, with ruptures occurring first in areas of the capsid with the highest level of curvature. The walls of lenacapavir-treated capsids were observed to flatten during early time points and fragment over the course of the experiment. This process is shown in the animation, created by Rachel Torrez in collaboration with Owen Pornillos (University of Utah). The animation was created using pdb_00009pry and pdb_00009y7j and their corresponding models in the EM Data Bank, EMD-71816 and EMD-72657.
