Systemic failure of European fisheries management Overcoming shortsighted interests with politically independent ecosystem-based catch limits may end overfishing in EU waters

Ever heard about “phantom recoveries” and “overfishing ratchets” ? These explain why still so many fish stocks are in a bad shape in European waters despite binding goals of the EU fisheries policy. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

A dating app-style card titled "Endangered Love" featuring a close-up underwater photograph of a Vaquita (Phocoena sinus), a small porpoise with distinctive dark rings around its eyes and grey coloring. The image is set against a deep blue marine background.

The card includes key information presented as profile details:

Species status: World's rarest marine mammal

Population: Only 18 individuals left in the wild

Current situation: facing threats from illegal fishing nets

Habitat needs: pristine waters for pod raising and fishing

The layout includes the IPBES logo at the top and dating app-style interface elements (X and heart symbols) at the bottom. The design uses a white card format against a gradient background, mimicking a social media dating platform.

2 days after #ValentinesDay, spare a thought for the vaquita - a species on the edge of vanishing forever.

Found only in the Gulf of California waters 0-50m deep, this porpoise is critically endangered.

With only ~18 left, let's protect this rare marine mammal before it's too late.💙

With much of the USA experiencing cold+heavy snow it's worth reminding #climatedeniers that #climatechange models never showed steady, uniform heating all over the world, but greater intensity, instability & unpredictability almost everywhere: sometimes heatwaves, droughts, floods, snow. Pass it on.
