🚫 Ultimately, the way we currently govern net zero has taken us a long way, but this approach may not prove as effective in removing the remaining half of the UK’s emissions. 6/n

🚗🏠🍔 At the same time, most of the remaining emissions are bound up with every day, people-centred activities — like transport, food, and domestic heating — meaning the next stage of decarbonisation will likely feel much more disruptive to the general public’s day-to-day life. 5/n

👎 We don’t yet fully understand what’s driving this change but we suggest that one important reason may be that the current approach to net zero hasn’t done enough to benefit or empower many communities. 4/n

🫸 However, cross party political support has weakened in recent years, reflecting a noticeable shift in the general public’s feelings toward net zero. 3/n

TL:DR

💪 The UK has long been seen as a global leader on climate action. Thanks to strong public and political support, the carbon emissions generated within the UK are now less than half what they were in 1990. 2/n

🟢 Foundation Scotland also bring value to the sector as a whole; they are highly active in terms of sectoral leadership and advocacy, and play key roles in developing, testing and disseminating innovative approaches to CBF good practice.

📚 The research finds that Foundation Scotland is a ‘one stop shop’ that plays a critical role in supporting communities and project developers to initiate, design, operate and evaluate CBFs.

🧩 This report aims to fill that gap by examining Foundation Scotland's approach to CBFs; who are responsible for helping to govern approximately 1/3 of Scotland's total CBF spend.

🔎 Despite the current scale and growth trajectory of CBFs there has been little research exploring the different types of CBF operation and governance, and the respective strengths and weaknesses of these different approaches in generating impactful and resilient community benefit, so far.

📈 CBFs support communities affected by developments such as renewable energy. Last year, CBFs distributed over £30m every year across Scotland's communities; a number which is set to increase over the coming years.
