I once had one where I had to provide a publication list as PDF, with the top ten relevant papers highlighted. Then I had to fill out all aspects, incl authors, journal, date, volume page numbers, in seperate cells in some sheet. I didn't do it. Not invited despite a pretty great fit. Maybe better.

I fully agree. It's just a silly game of 'let's see how many hoops they will jump through.' Pretty horrible way to spend your precious time.

Lots of #birding this weekend. On Friday evening, I came past the Bodensee, where I decided to spend the night and go out for birds early morning. Great crested grebes engaged in their elaborate mating/pair-bonding rituals. Attenborough type stuff! Absolutely gorgeous to watch!

Then when we came home, I quickly went into the bird reserve on my doorstep, because I saw people reported birds that I had not photographed. A young crane has been hanging out here for about a week now. A common snipe was a nice bonus. Two stock doves were far away, but I like them.

Plenty of song birds active as well. I probably took 400 pictures of a group of fieldfares. This is the only one that was reasonable enough to post. Same for the coal tit, which kept hiding. Starlings and Chiffchaff were more cooperative :).

But I saw other #birds, obviously. Particularly cool was the male Eider duck. These are less common this far inland, and although I have seen hundreds of them on the coast, seeing them here is a treat. Finally captured a Eurasian collared dove which I somehow had not seen since I got my new kit.

That illustrates exactly what I mean! I have been guilty of overlooking birds for a long time. I noticed them, but I did not really see them, as I often focused on other taxa. In the last five years I picked up birding, and recently picked up bird photography. I see them very differently now...

Moorhen

Look at this bird. I mean it. This bird is so common to many of us and because of this it gets very little attention. I also find myself often enjoying the rare or otherwise special animals, but let's be honest: how is this not special? Moorhens are spectacularly beautiful.

To me, all marsh tits look like this; mostly hiding, never sitting still, very skittish. Why are these birds so shy? (at least they are loud this time of year, making it easier to find them at all!)

Some quick edits before work today. I am quite happy about these pictures, considering I had about 25 minutes to get to the spot, find the #birds, take the pictures, and be home for dinner. I made it though :).

Too lazy to edit (and to be fair I don't have any means to at home), but boy was it a good idea to really rush my way into the field 30 minutes before sunset. Curlews are so cool!

Therefore, we argue that while such Smart farming technology can offer promising benefits, they must go hand in hand with biodiversity targets. If this is not the case, we believe it is unlikely that such technological advances will lead to biodiversity benefits.

03.03.2026 09:19 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Sure, lower inputs will lower levels of pollution on the field and also in its surrounding areas. However the increased efficiency of Smart farming technology may also increase the proportional total land use in the landscape, leaving even less land for biodiversity.

03.03.2026 09:18 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

We observed that many works on Smart Farming technology present solutions 'with benefits'. However, there seems to be a wide assumption that these benefits are a given, a natural result of lowering inputs into agroecosystems. We wonder if that is valid for all environmental parameters?

New paper online today. In it, we advocate for biodiversity in the increasingly modernized agricultural world. Smart farming could be a wonderful tool to alleviate pressure from agro-ecosystems, but, as we argue here, this will only happen if biodiversity becomes an explicit target.
