The prop-makers for Alien (1979) kept being told by Scott to make Nostromo 'more gothic'. They added texture and juxtaposed solid permanent scructure with delicate bespoke elements sticking out. They didn't extrude a Norman cathedral and slap a ramming prow on the nose.
