peterwalker99.bsky.social posted on Reform UK's press conference:
We've had questions from three broadcasters so far, and they have all been about the practicalities and costs. None has asked about the legal/moral issue of retrospectively changing laws so huge numbers of people who have made their lives in the UK will be expelled.

This. @peterwalker99.bsky.social here with an excellent point.
From Brexit to Rwanda, from Reform to Labour to UK media, the focus on financial aspects of policies that violate human rights & hurt the lives of innocent people seems cynical & callous & an already shift of our values.

Same problem as w/training doctors. Increasing # of medical places at unis, only creates more bottlenecks when new doctors want to grow in their chosen fields, but arn't finding the routes to progress. Unless more training places are created post-graduation, we will be educating doctors for AU & NZ!

Time for constitutional reform! They can continue to play out the soap opera that is British monarchy, but their constitutional role along with exorbitant share of the public purse must end! Alongside stopping the circus of HOL appointments and FPTP. Proportional Representation + elected HOL!

ICC judge sanctioned by US urges EU to fight back
Nicolas Guillou said the Trump administrationβs use of sanctions undermines European democracy and called for Europe to curb reliance on American tech.
βThe greatest risk to democracy is the internalization of fear,β Guillou said.
βThat public decision-makers start censoring themselves & fail to apply the law as they should... that is how judicial systems typically function in authoritarian countries.β

Fact-checking Jim Ratcliffe's immigration and benefit claims
BBC Verify has been examining some of the Manchester United owner's claims.
Why, when the BBC's own fact-checkers had shown that Ratcliff's figures were gross exaggerations, was Nigel Farage allowed to repeat them, unchallenged, in an interview broadcast on the Today programme?

The biggest problem in our society is that people were not taught to think but allowed to vote! Everything that's happening right now is down to complete ignorance of voters who were utterly failed by the education system & by politics for telling them that there is a 3-word solution to everything.

Steve Bannon boasted about Farage ties in exchange with Epstein
Revelation comes as image surfaces of Bannon with Matt Goodwin, candidate for Farage's Reform UK in crucial Gorton and Denton by-election
Our media rightly rages about the already-disgraced Mandelson and Andrew but wrongly fails to hold others in that murky moneyed network to account.
Our democracy is under attack from these dismal people right now. Do not be exposing that a decade too late.

I would think that there isn't much about #Brexit that's botched. It turned out exactly as designed (perhaps, fartage et al wanted it to happen quicker, but other that that...) If Starmer keeps sitting on the fence, his tush will become very sore. He needs to grow a pair & apply to #RejoinEU!

I agree, they should just call it that. According to govt web site, though, the SLC is acting of behalf of govt, is not-for-profit and the repayments go back to the treasury. That said, the whole system is f****d! We now have lots more money paid at the top of unis for a lot poorer education options

This is income tax though, nothing to do with wealth. So, not really a blueprint for a wealth tax or anything else, apart from increasing said wealth of those on the receiving end of the extortionate interest payments.

Not really. You'll HAVE to repay the bank loan. Student debt gets written off eventually. Just view it as a graduate "tax". It's probably better for one's mental health that way.

Indeed! My daughter is graduating this year, & in addition to worrying about exams, she is stressing about post-F2 situation! And that's on top of the debt. Streeting needs to sort out the career progression business. + it is odious that extortionate interest rates are applied to the student loans.
