Usually, donations & medical expenses are normally placed with the person with the lowest income, but I've seen times when this wasn't true. Not often, but sometimes.

Without income splitting, the best scenario is when all medical expenses & donations go to me, but my wife has to pay, so I would compensate her for the pain.

Being a former financial officer, she will double-check all the figures. Of course.

I run scenarios moving around donations & medical expenses, to see which combo benefits us the most.
With income splitting, applying donations & medical expenses to me gives the same net return as medical expenses to me & all donations to my wife.
Without a program, I would never bother with this.

It's playing 'around with our income taxes time.' Merde.
Most of my income is from a non-indexed RRIF & my wife's is from her indexed pension.
At first when we retired, income splitting didn't help. This year, it helps a lot, as her income drifts upwards from mine over time.
