I didn't feel the quake today! I felt one back in October or November 2024 which was at the western end of the Port Hills Fault, but that is the only quake I've felt so far in Christchurch

In 2023, a pair of earthquakes rocked TΓΌrkiye. But are there similar paired events that occurred in this region in the past? A new #SRL paper explores a seismic sequence from 1114-1115 CE through the lens of the 2023 events. βš’οΈ

Magnitude 7.1 #earthquake just over an hour ago off the coast of #Malaysia (2026-02-22Z16:57) The good news is that it is deep (over 600 km) which greatly reduces the harm it can cause.

A thread for the 15-year anniversary of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. I won’t have a chance to post it on the day, so I’m doing it a couple days early. Note that the work I’m posting was carried out by many brilliant people. 1/

In the background are a low range of hills with grey cloudy skies above, and a small stand of poplar trees stands further back in the squash field.

It was fantastic to join you, thank you @aotearoa-unzpd.bsky.social for organising & driving me up to, around & back from rural Hawke’s Bay!

Kilauea erupted again yesterday in a fierce display. In only the 2nd time in 40 years, park officials closed the area due to the intensity.

Fountains were officially recorded at 500 m high, grapefruit size tephra were being ejected, and tephra fall was measured up to 20 miles away.

A fast moving coronal mass ejection (CME) means the northern lights may be visible overnight, and perhaps on Tuesday night too

The arrival time of the CME is uncertain, but aurora sightings are possible in northern Britain and perhaps in southern areas depending on cloud cover.

The EQ faults (& scarp) are drowned by the current high stand. Nearby Sado Island shares similar deformation record and is flanked by a similar nearshore scarp. It is the potential location of a large fault system initially suggested by Ota Yoko in 1992 (she was 🎯). 2/3
