I have jumped on the Balatro train hard. In 4 days I've put in 16 hours (which is a lot for me).
It's such a great game for me because not only is it super fun and addicting, but it's something I can play while listening to a podcast/audiobook, plus I can start and stop whenever.

I'm one of those weird guys that enjoys listening to Hams talk with my shortwave radio.
Sometimes the conversations are mundane (though still interesting), but every once in a while you'll hear something that just really catches you off guard.

Ooh, I like the sound of that! How common is it to find other people using JS8Call?

I've been hearing people talk about how we're going into a year of great propagation, so perhaps I'll be able to phone out farther than I think!

Yeah, I've heard that there's lots of people that like to do QRP. Perhaps that community would have some tips for me!
FT8 is possible too once I learn how to set that up

As I've been learning more about amateur radio it kinda looks like I'll mostly have to stick with CW if I want to make long distance contacts, at least at first.
My first setup probably won't be a super powerful radio with an amazing antenna, but I'm hoping that CW can still get me out pretty far.

Hello to all the Ham/amateur radio who've started following me even though I don't have a callsign in my name yet!
I promise I'm not a bot ๐ญ I'll hopefully have my license in early 2025!

Yeah, HamStudy is great! But this stuff is so foreign to me that I want to make sure I fully understand everything, especially when it comes to working with electricity.
HamStudy is my main resource and this book with be more for further reading on things I don't quite understand.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to do much studying the last couple days because life has been so busy, but I did have a chance to pick up some extra study material that's going to help me out a lot!
Ham radio requires a lot of info thats way outside my wheelhouse, but I'm getting there!

Yes, this is what I was using! Definitely a great resource, but it focuses only on American tests and regulations. I'm sure a lot of the information will overlap, but I'm looking for stuff that's Canadian specific.

So, in learning about ham radio and starting to study, I've found that Canada deals with amateur radio quite a bit differently than USA, so I've been scouring the internet trying to find resources to help me study for the Canadian test specifically.
Any Canadian Hams on here that have some tips?

Maybe I go for tech and general at the same time then. I have no background in electronics and as far as my knowledge of radio stuff goes I'm starting from scratch, so Extra might be too much for me until I start playing around with my own setup.

I feel like I've been playing in amateur radio long enough now that I think I should try to get my Technicians license and fully dive in.
I have a lot to learn though. I've been looking at HamStudy and I really don't know hardly anything. I've got a lot of studying ahead of me!
Y'all got any tips?

"I don't enjoy ham radio because it's male dominated and the things they say/topics they discuss make me feel unwelcome" will give you better conversations than "I don't enjoy ham radio because it's all dudes". The latter feels dismissive and will make people defensive.

I think a lot of the issue is that tone doesn't transfer over text so people will, by default, take you literally unless it's very clearly hyperbolic.
If you say what you mean instead, you'll generally get better mileage. The way tone is perceived is very important.
