With research universities in the US under threat, this statement from Page Fortna offers a glimmer of hope. There is still leadership potential at our universities. Page used to be the Chair of Political Science, where I got my degree. This statement from her makes me once more proud of Columbia.

Most of us arrive here on student visas that expire unless we get an academic job, and even then, we have to first apply for a 3-year visa before even being eligible to apply for a green card. The green card is the holy grail of permanent status.

Perhaps he was even arrested while walking into one of the buildings where I lived/ Mahmood was a green card holder. Many of my friends might not know this, but very few foreign-born students are green card holders.
