The University of Melbourneβs v-c and renowned science communicator Emma Johnston has died aged 52, after an 11-month tenure as head of the institution

Vale, Emma. This is truly gut-wrenching news. Sincere condolences for her family, friends, and countless colleagues in the scientific community. theconversation.com/emma-johnsto...
I canβt believe this news. What an amazing woman - I was looking forward to working in her system for however long she was leading us @unimelb.bsky.social
You can do this right now:
Think of a person who wrote a paper you love, whose work influenced or helped you, or has made your professional life better.
Search up their email address. Shoot them a quick email of thanks. It means so, so much. This is a rough time of year, share some joy.
A3 - I had a tribe! I organised and connected with a group of like minded staff across the institution and they would catch up with my for coffee, check in with me and generally support me when I felt lost. #LTHEchat
A3. Seeking out like-minded people who feed your soul.
I have a group who do this from across the globe and it is awesome.
#LTHEchat
That was me for 18 months. It became debilitating and prevented me from being successful.
A2. Iβm doing the opposite - Iβve started working out of the tea room on the busy floor to see more people.
#LTHEchat
A3. I have 2 people at my work who are always looking out for me. You can see from my posts it has been a rocky 3 years in assessment land. But it is shaping up to be an amazing 2026.
#LTHEchat
A3. Iβm still experiencing the work loneliness - it has been 3 years. But last week a change in leadership is helping - asked me to implement it and I think I might go from a team of 6 to a team of about 30 - bringing everyone into the group to have fun working together.
#LTHEchat
Yes early on I was probably a bit forceful - it has impacted my mental health so I have a psychologist as well. Sheβs totally supportive which is lovely.
A2. Iβve been lucky to have a manager and a few key people who understand that Iβm experiencing professional loneliness through being a bit left out. They are being inclusive and supportive which helps.
A2. I feel most lonely right now. Iβm in a leadership position that I love - but I was moved to a floor almost by myself and then I work in assessment people struggle with what I have to do - at the moment major change.
#lLTHEchat
A1. I love alone time but for me that is different to being lonely. Iβm rarely lonely in my own alone time but Iβm often lonely at work - alone or with people - because I do not feel included.
A1. This one resonates with me - Iβm in assessment and it is lonely. Regularly not thought of in meetings that cross over with my work. Knowing it could really help me and I could really help them is tough.

Taken this morning - before I headed off for a day full of meetings that went quite well

My first gold bunny of the year.
Having hit rock bottom with #highered #burnout Iβm slowly rebuilding myself by spending at least 30 minutes in my garden each day. What an absolute privilege

Last of our Board of Examiner meetings today. As the lead of the assessment portfolio there have been lots of lessons learned & lots of ideas for creative, safe and meaningful assessments in 2026.

Was told this week while listening to a wonderful session on programmatic assessment that the #highered community on #Bluesky is getting back to the network we had on the other. Havenβt visited for a while. Glad to be back and checking in
