"I understand that the compact you feel about working for a university has now been broken. The compact that you weren't going to earn very much money but you had a secure job for life in a comfortable environment without a heavy workload. That's gone."

Just a quick reminder that our Vice Chancellor said this into a microphone in front of university employees last week and thought nothing of it!

Warnings from the Universities of #Nottingham, #Cardiff, and #Essex about the substantial reduction in research time. “Doing more with less” isn’t realistic when you’re already operating at the limit of what’s possible. The fat isn’t there to be cut.

Mori dream bonds and C^*-actions We construct a correspondence between Mori dream regions arising from small modifications of normal projective varieties and C^*-actions on polarized pairs which are bordisms. Moreover, we show that the Mori dream regions constructed in this way admit a chamber decomposition on which the models are the geometric quotients of the C^*-action. In addition, we construct, from a given C^*-action on a polarized pair for which there exist at least two admissible geometric quotients, a C^*-equivariantly birational C^*-variety, whose induced action is a bordism, called the pruning of the variety.

The work discussed by Stefano Urbinati - joint with Lorenzo Barban, Eleonora Romano, and Luis Solá Conde - was published last year in Mathematische Nachrichten.

Low Pay!
Zero Security!
Lots of stress!
Hearting barely works in any building!

That quote in the top right? The one where our vice chancellor said that we can no longer expect a comfortable place to work and a light workload in exchange for no pay? Yeah, she actually said that.

Quartic surfaces up to volume preserving equivalence We study log Calabi–Yau pairs of the form (P^3,\Delta), where \Delta is a quartic surface, and classify all such pairs of coregularity less than or equal to one, up to volume preserving equivalence. In particular, if (P^3,\Delta) is a maximal log Calabi–Yau pair then we show that it has a toric model.

The work described by Tom Ducat was published in Selecta Mathematica.

Forbidden patterns in tropical plane curves Tropical curves in R^2 correspond to metric planar graphs but not all planar graphs arise in this way. We describe several new classes of graphs which cannot occur. For instance, this yields a full combinatorial characterization of the tropically planar graphs of genus at most five.

Future Nottingham, CMC, course closures, student staff ratios, the slashing of research time... all of this is going to destroy the foundation of this university and what makes it so necessary at this precise moment in history.

@uniofnottingham.bsky.social is closing courses, slashing research funding, and making staff redundant (with a whopping £85m hole in their finances) and all the while somehow the number of top earners is increasing significantly. It just doesn’t seem justifiable.

Nottingham cuts ‘threaten status as research-intensive university’ Move to reduce academics’ protected research time to 25 per cent brings union warning Academics at the University of Nottingham have warned that its status as a research-intensive institution is under threat from proposals to cut protected research time. Nottingham is going through the second phase of a restructuring programme in response to financial pressure. That has already prompted pushback against the suspension of recruitment to, and the potential closure of, courses including music, languages and nursing.

A Generalization of the Murnaghan–Nakayama Rule for K-k-Schur and k-Schur Functions The K-k-Schur functions and k-Schur functions appeared in the study of K-theoretic and affine Schubert Calculus as polynomial representatives of Schubert classes. In this paper, we introduce a new family of symmetric functions \mathcal{F}_\lambda^{(k)}, that generalizes the constructions via the Pieri rule of K-k-Schur functions and k-Schur functions. Then we obtain the Murnaghan–Nakayama rule for the generalized functions. The rule is described explicitly in the cases of K-k-Schur functions and k-Schur functions, with concrete descriptions and algorithms for coefficients. Our work recovers the result of Bandlow, Schilling, and Zabrocki for k-Schur functions, and explains it as a degeneration of the rule for K-k-Schur functions. In particular, many other special cases and connections promise to be detailed in the future.
