"Russian flu," the pandemic that hit in 1977, bears an evolutionary signature of having emerged from a lab, perhaps as part of a failed vaccine effort. Covid, mpox, Ebola, and other influenza pandemics don't. Here's my story on a new way to trace the origins of pandemics. Gift link: nyti.ms/46N0W33

I don't think you have to Nostradamus to figure that bombing Iran might raise oil prices. And it seems pretty obvious that buying oil in advance of causing an oil price spike might just save Americans a lot of money. But...

...maybe there wasn't much planning?

You never know whether these right-wingers will come off as belligerent or wildly disingenuous. This guy opted for the latter. I agree that Brooke did a great job of exposing his many hypocrisies, although he didn't seem to care.

β€œThere’s no evidence that patients use this information,” said one health economist.

There’s nothing grassroots about the American Right.

It’s a top-down, money-driven model of social and political change:

Seize power, then buildβ€”or at least mimicβ€”legitimacy later

The SAVE act is anti-American & anti-democracy. I’m furious that it passed the House.

It’s already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. Voter fraud is rarer than rareβ€”and when it does occur, it’s often MAGA trying to illegally tip the scale.
