I agree with your sentiment, but laws in some US states (e.g., CA, FL, GA, IL, OH, NY, TX) require that "Dr." be clarified by the degree to avoid creating a false impression of a med degree (e.g., MD, DO). CA even requires specifying the field of a PhD as in "Dr. John Smith, PhD in Psychology."
