i saw a very homoerotic staging of my fair lady a few years back and it faced the same issue. i can appreciate staging and the interpretation as a Production but if the text won't let the show fully commit to the bit such that the interpretation can pay off, it just leaves me feeling kinda cold 😭💔
the main issue i had with this is that by making all the queer subtext into just. text. THE SURFACE PLOT SIMPLY JUST STOPS MAKING SENSE 😭😭 i really enjoyed it as a spectacle and a piece of entertainment and ncuti is great in it but like. MAN it just did not actually hang together for me as a whole 💔
