Difficult to emphasize just how much a generation of kids has been taught that being dishonest, superficial, and narcissistic is the pathway to attention and therefore success
Can I ask, what would a service have looked like? The pews are outside the little room with the altar, so where would the preacher (priest?) stand? Would the congregation ever get to see the cool stuff at the front?
Let’s get one thing straight: We are not a Christian nation. We are a nation where you are free to be a Christian.
Your religion guides you, not all of us. It’s as simple as that.
I understand that there are a lot of folks on the left who instinctively recoil from religious language, and with good reason given its use by the right.
But please listen to this, and focus on how he's trying to realign "Christian values" so they align with and advance progressive policy goals.

I’d think, as an American traveling, you’d have considered that this question might come up. I think it’s reasonable to say, “I’d like to not get into politics on my vacation,” but also, geez, of course people wonder. I wanna know who I’m dealing with.
The vibe is definitely different among the rank and file than at any point I can remember. The question is how long it takes for that to filter up to a profoundly risk averse class of elected officials
I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

There’s ageism here. T asks young people to process more than they can handle (professionally, cognitively, romantically), exhausting them so that he can blame/dispose of them later.
IDK who will win between Talarico and Crockett, but I like them both, and I invite them to move to Ohio and run for something if they find some available time in the next few months. ❤️

Oh yeah. I gained a lot of credibility with my kids when I’d say, I think that’s too scary for you, and they’d read it anyway, and they’d get scared. 🤷♀️
Growing up is hard. 🙃
I don’t have any solutions here other than we need to be brave to have difficult conversations: with our kids, with our friends, and with our adversaries.
Any one book could be freedom or a threat depending on the current culture within a family.
But some families aren’t so supportive of what’s unfamiliar or unknown. The whole conversation around the value of books needs to happen early and often, but it doesn’t happen in some families.
And I already had good rapport with my kids about reading widely. They could pick things at the library without me vetoing their choices. And a book that doesn’t fit today might be more interesting in a couple years and vice versa.
I think I handled it well—reassuring that it wasn’t for them and they weren’t in trouble and I’d make it disappear and you can put a book down whenever you want to stop—but I was acutely aware in the moment that this could be a learning or a traumatizing situation depending on my reaction.
So, not every kid will put down a book that they don’t want to read.
My kids were early readers, and there was a book incident when someone read a book that was not for them.
